THE DALLES, OREGON, MONDAY. JANUARY 28, 1901.
NO. 23
BRIEFS FROM THE
STATE HOUSE
.Measures to He Passed Upon So Ap
parent Change in the Senatorial
Oucstion.
Salem, Or., Jan. 1S, 1901.
The people of Oregon are watching
with interest, the actions of.the honee
committee on railway and transporta
tion, in regard to the disposition of the
bill, which is now in its possession pro
Tiling for a reduction of railway rates
in the state. Thi? measure is in the
interests of the whole people, not only
those of the shipping and traveling
classes, hut for the welfare of the pro
ducer and merchant as well. It is said
by many here, that the committee, of
which Mr. tury,of Multnomah, is chair
man, )! hold the proposed law in its
possessim, and not report it hack to the
house for action. The introduc r of the
bill, Mr. Carter, of .laekeon, on the other
hand, however, says he will see to it that
the proposition will be presented to the j
house earlv this week for consideration. ,
It is lertain, that should the members
1 1 ,
desire to take on the measure for dii
cassion. thev can demand Uiu hill from
the committee nnd secure h vote iinon !
it whether the committee is willing or
not.
Senator Johnston has Introduced a
measure in the seriate, which is in the
interests of a portage railway at the
dalles. Wiiile it is improbable that the
bill will pass the iiouse, jet it will serve
to bring the attention of representative
aieu of Oregon to the needs of the people
of the northeastern section of the state.
Another item of great interest to the
citizens of that section, is the possible
construction in Eastern Oregon of an
agricultural college. In support of local
iag such an institution there it is claimed
that the present state agricultural col
!e does not meet the demands of a
jarue part of the state. That the soil. ' AH doctors told Renick Hamilton, of
conditions and climate existing in the uv" Jeilerson, 0., after suffering IS
eastern section, are not even similar to , ninths from liectaf Fistula, he would
those of the Willamette valley, hence , die unless a costly operation was per
uianv of the experiments made hero am formed ; hut he cured himself with live
of no practical value to residents of thejhox-f Bncklen's Arnica Salve, the
other locality. It cannot be stated at surest Pilb cure on Earth, and the best

the state, will receive some consideration

itio senatorial situation is as it has
been from the first.
mo most graceful act that could be
done, would be for both Mr. Corbett and
Mr. McBride to withdraw from the
race, ana let some new candidato be
presented, voted upon and elected. The
followers of Corbett are pledged to their
constituents, to oppose the election of
McBride, while the McBride men are
also pledged to secure the defeat of
Corbett. Thus it cau be seen, that, un
less some of the members abuse the
trust and confidence of the people,
neither McBride or Corbett can be
elected.

Tornh-A, Kan., Jan. 2". Mrs. Nation
addressed large audiences at the United
Brethren and First Christian churcheB
in this city tonight. She simply told
the story of her work and how she had
to start on the crusade.
"It is a pleasure," she said, "tospeak
here. Usually I am prevented from
talking by the proprietors of these mur
derous whisky shops.
"This issue in Kansas is 'Down with
the whisky trust!' The best recks to
throw are votes. We women cannot
vote, but you men with your ballots and
we women with our hatchets will clean
up this awful traffic."
Mrs. Nation will probably address the
the meeting of the Kansas W. C. T. U.,
which will be held here tomorrow. An
attempt is also being made to have her
speak to the legislature on the subject
of temperance.
Mrs. Nation says she will not attempt
to break up the joints in Topeka single-
handed, but if the women of the town
will aid her, she will start out "joint
smashing" tomorrow.
Honor For Knlnnr.
Cowes, Isle of Wight, Jan. 27. This
morning Emperor William received from
the hands of the Duke of Connaught his
sword on his appointment as Field Mar
shal of the British army, in the presence
of the households of King Edward and
the dead queen, as well as a number of
British and German naval officials. His
Majesty expressed great delight at the
appointment. He will entertain King
Edward and the members of the royal
family at tea .on the imperial yacht
Hohenzollern. Today he celebrated bis
birthday at Osborne. Shortly after
o'clock tliis morning the members of the
German embassy who arrived from
London yesterday proceeded to Osborne
and tendered congratulations to Emperor
William upon his birthday. The em
peror, accompanied by the Grown Prince,
met them in the reception-room. There
were no formal speeches.
Glorious erii
Comes from Dr. D. B. Caigile, of
Washita, I. T. He writes:
"Four bottles of Electric Bitters has
cured Mrs. Brewerof scrofula, which had
caused her great suffering ior years
Terrible sores would break out on her
head and face, and the beet doctors
could give no help; but her cure is com
plete and her health is excellent." This
shows what thousands have proved.
that Electric Bitters is the best blood

remedy for eczema, tetter, salt rheum,
ulcers, boils and running sores. It

No blemishes all in perfect con
dition. Persons who suffer from indigestion
can not expect to live long, because they
cannot eat the food required to nourish
'. the body and the products of the undi
gested foods they do eat poison the
blood. It is important, to cure indiges
tion as soon as possible, and the best
method of doing this is to use the prepa
ration known as Kodol Dyspepsia Cure.
It digests what you eat and restores all
the digestive organs to perfect health
