of every self-respecting republican.
But even all this might be con
doned were it not for the crowning
infamies of the legislative hold-up
of 1897. The caucus call of that
session provided for a viva voce vote
and was signed by forty-eight mem
bers. Mr. Corbett was a candidate
then, as now, and when the vote of
the caucus went against him he aided
and abetted a gang ot political
anarchists in holding up the legisla
ture in order to render the caucus
ineffective. He is on record, over
his own signature, as advancing the
hold-up, and it is a matter of public
notoriet' that on the 7th of January
1897, at the opening', of the legisla
tive session, he mailed a letter to
ltev. I. D. Driver, then senator from
Lane county, which began: "My
Dear Friend : I sent you a Xew
Year's present enclosed in a letter,"
and closed by offering him 115
more, in lieu of Mr. Driver's cam
paign expenses, so that "he might
feel more independent."
It would, of course, be difficult to
prove that Mr. Corbett furnished
the money to bribe the entire popu
list delegation to refuse to take the
oath of office, but the thing wasjdonc,
and done in Corbett's interest, and it
is impossible to believe otherwise
than that he put up the money.1
I
Moreover, it is open and notorious '
that in the same interest the Kldridge
block in Sulcm was fitted up and filled
with over' luxury that could tickle '
tue palate anil cleuaueu tue senses,
in addition to a uarein of cvpnansi
from the purliens of Portland, who,"
were brought there, paid for, and ,
kept there to minister to the passions
of the grosser beasts of the anarchists.
All this and more that cannot be ,
put in print was done, and done in
Mr. Corbett's intctest. Jonathan
Bourne, an ardent free silveiite, (lis-,
penscd the liquid refreshments and
bossed the harem ; and the same .
Jonathan, backed by ihe notorious i
Larry Sullivan of sailor hoarding!
hoiiie fame, is again in Salem urging,
in his own peculiar way, the election '
of Corbett. i
Is it conceivable that a majority'
of the senators and representatives of
this slate will so far forget the duty
they owe to their own relf-respeot
and that of their constituents as to
vote for such a man as Henry W. i
Corbett? We cannot believe it for a j
moment. i
