caucus to support him, and for a
time it looked as though he would
succeed in tying up the election.
At that stage of the proceedings he
came to grief through the skillful
work of two of Mitchell's supporters,
Sam Corwin, of Grant county, and
Sam Johnson, of Tillamook county,
who, without the knowledge of
Mitchell, undertook to expose the
corrupt methods by which Corbett
was endeavoring to secure the
election. Being satisfied that Cor
bett's managers were using money,
they permitted themselves to appear
willing to accept a bribe, and Anally
met Corbett's chief agent behind the
woodpile near the old Chemeketa
hotel in Salem, at night, and were
paid 62000 each, with the under
standing that they, on the vote next
day, desert Mitchell and support
Corbett. They waited until u few
minutes before the hour of balloting
when they handed Mr. Corbett a
letter in which they threatened to
expose him unless he withdrew his
name. So successful was their plan
that that gentleman made haste to
notify his supporters that the game
was up, and Mitchell was promptly
elected. It was this circumstance
that gave the unsuccessful candidate
the name of Henry Woodpile Cor
bett, tht has so often appeared in
public print, but which has not per
haps been understood by the later
generation of Oregonians.
In view of his record in 1S9S, in
holding up the legislature by a cor
rupt combination iu which populists,
democrats and renegade republicans,
such ss Jonathan Bourne, of Port
land, assisted, carrying out Corbett's
plot to defeat the unanimous choice
of the republican caucus, it is a little
short of ridiculous to And him the
stalwart advocate of the caucus
system now.
