The Dalles Daily Chronicle. SATURDAY - jan. 12, moi DIFFERENCE OF OP1SIOS. There is merit in the claim of each of Oregon's congressmen in their position on the reapportionment bill, says the Salem Statesman. Congress man Tongue, of this district, justifies his opposition to an increase in the number of members by telling this palpable truth: 'The house is now so big it is un wieldy. To make it larger will ia crease the difficulty. The rules non are such as to suppress the individual and vest enormous power in the speaker. The larger the house the larger the power concentrated in the speaker and the less the individu ality of the members. Oregon, with two members, has a larger representa tion in a house of 357 than one of asc." On the other hand, Congressman Moody gives a plausible reason for hts support of the increased member ship, when he says that "the Burleigh bill is a more equitable recognition of the increased population of a large number of states, particularly in the West, and by giving the two neigh boring 6tates an additional member each materially strengthens the Pa ciGc coast delegation in the house.'' All of which goes to show that there are two sides to nearly all questions, and that honest, intelligent men may differ, while each wishss to do the best thing possible. According to a Washington gos siper, Senator Vest must have about as poor an opinion of the democratic farty of the United States in the concrete as Lady Mary Wortley Montagu had of the women of the England of her day in the abstract. The senator is quoted as saying that "there are no good democrats any more," and the way that the demo crats in general act reminds him of Lafe Hinton's pack of hunting dogs in Southwestern Missouri. "The last time I was there," he said, "those dogs were no good. They chased rabbits, skunks and other varmints just as if they were game." The senator asked Lafe what was the matter with the dogs, and Lafe answered disgustedly that he "mixed the breeds, and the young ones go chasing after all kinds of fool things, while the old ones sit on the trail and won't hunt any more." And, remarked the senator, "that is the way with the democrats since they began to mix up with the populists." OUR CHURCHES Calvary Baptist church Rev. V. . Clifton, pastor.
