In permittins its carrying trade
on the ocean to drop to 0 per cent
of the total business of transporting '
an enormous volume of exports and j
imports tue Lnited Males has over,
looked some facts of great import
ance connected with the national de
fense. Foreign ships handle 91 per
cent of our foreign trade, and they
are manned by foreign sailors. As
a consequence the number of Amori-.
can sailors is comparatively small.'
As the navy is enlarged this defect
is seriously felt. The people of this
country pay an average of f00,000
a day to foreign ships to meet freight
bills. The money goes in part to
make foreign sailors in ever-increasing
numbers. This nation has an
enormous coast line and it needs
sailors of its own. Another point is
that foreign ships can be withdrawn
in time of war. The title of the
Frye subsidy bill speaks of provid
ing the United States with "auxiliary
cruisers, transports and seamen for
government use when necessary." A ;

Of the product of this well-knonn brewery the United States Health
Keports for June US. 1900, sttys: "A more supeiior brew never entered
the labratorv of the United States Health reports. It is absolutely devoid
of the slightest trace of adulteration, but on the other hand is composed of
the bent of malt and choicest of hops. Its tonic qualities are of the high
est and it can be used with the greatest benefit and satisfaction by old and
voting. Its use can conscientiously be prescribed by the physician with
the cersainty that a better, purer or more wholesome beverage could not
possibly be found."
