I) c Dalles VOL. XII THE DALLES, OREGON, THURSDAY. DECEMBER 13, 1900. NO. 412 VIEW OF RELATIONS OF MANKIND I'ive Cardinal Points Submitted by Minister tt'u Address by the Plenipotentiary of the Celestial Umpire to the Con tempo ray Club of Philadelphia. Pim.AiiKi.i'iiiA, Dec. 12, The cilleries of the Art Club went crowded luRt niht by invited guesta of the Contemporary club to heat Minister Wn deliver nn ad droHs entitled, "The Chinese View." He was cordially received. In Iiih address Mr. Wu dealt upon the five cardinal re liitlotiH of mankind as seen bv the Chinese nation. He drew many interest ing us well nn amusing comparisons be tween the customs of bis own and of the American people. After speaking of the grout ago of the Chinese nation, Minister Wu said : "Let us inquire into the cause, or rather combination of causes, namely the five cardinal relations of mankind. That is to say, first, between sovereign ministers and subjects; second, between parent and child ; third, between elder mid Younger or between superior and inferior ; fourth, the husband and wife, and last but not least, fiiend and friend. In the fust case the attribute is benevo lence on the part of the sovereign and respect on the part of the subject. In the second relation the parent must be kind and the child obedient. Between tin: elder and Hie younger there mtiBt be respect on the part of the latter. Con cerning the fourth relation, righteous ness is the husband's attribute, while submission is the duty of the wife. The duty of friends Is to be faithful and truthful." The speaker expanded on each of the live relations, giving the result of their application in China, and bis view of corresponding returns in America. He spoke particularly of the second relation, saying that in America it was customary for the son to sit in the presence of the father. "If my son should sit in my presence," jocularly declared the minister, "I would punch his head." In conclusion Mr. Wu said: "Although our civil association is not perfect, yet It has stood the teet of years woll and the nation still exists. Of course In many respects the customs and man ners of your countrv and my connlrv are different, but there are good poinla in ench. I think if each of us could leitrn the others' good points and profit by them it would be well. We must under- j stand ench other better, for much of the present trouble has aiisen from mis understanding. What you think is right we may think wrong. Therefore it is important that we judge not from our standpoint, but from the other point of view. In our country we are guided by duty; in yours, love is the guiding principle. I think we would bo more happy if we could strike a medium." I'luyecl Out. Ireland's struggle, be declared, should continue without ceasing until the land lords were forced to abandon their present intolerable system of dual con trol. One branch of the Irish League, continued Mr. O'Brien, will devote its time to bringing to the doors of land lords, landgrabbers and their caetle allieB the inconvenience of landlordism. The Herald says that 500 anarchists vociferously applaud ed last night at a meeting on behalf of the family of BreBci, the aeeaesin, when one of their speakers threatened the life of President McKinley, "should he at tempt to interfere with free speech." The .speaker was Alexander Horr, who announced his approval of assassination. The anarchists met in Everett hall, East Fourth street. They had obtained the hall by a ruse which Henry Bimberg, the proprietor, resented last night. Emma Goldman went to Bimberg and offered to hire the hall, alleging that it was wanted for a meeting of the "Social Science Club." Bimberg did not recog nize her and consented to accommodate the club. John N. Cook bad vigorously denounced the government, when Bim berg asked leave to speak. He declared the hall hud been obtained under false pretenses. "If I hear any incendiary speeches, I shall have to have the lights turned out," be udded. "Sit down! Sit down! Capitalists! Do you want to interrupt free speech?" yelled the audience. Bimberg sat down and Alexander Horr arose and went on to cay that society believed in government by the bjyonet aud that Jefferson was an an archist. "If 1 were in Russia today," said he, 'I would be an assassin. If any one in control of government here persists in prohibiting tho right of free speech, if the mayor of tho city does, it, or the governor of the date, or tho piesident of the United States, ho does it at his peril."
