The Dalles Daily Chronicle. FRIDAY - DKC. 7. 1900 2'RVSTS, TARIFFS AX1) TRADK. The British press, our London correspondent tells ns, finds a ily in the amber of its joy over the tri umph of sound money and national honor in the United States elections, says the New York Tribune. This tausciforni grievance Is protection. There will be no return to the Wil son tariff or any such system for the benefit of foreign competitors with American industry. Wherefore the lkitisu press, or a part of it, seeing "Made in the United States" loom ing large and frequent upon rail roads and bridges and innumerable -other wares all over the red tinted map, laments that Brother Jonathan is so joined to his idols, and especial ly that in his idolatry he has made himself the prey and victim of the oclopediau trust, the natural off spring of protection. Doubtless the lament and the solicitude for our welfare are well meant. Yet, the solemn and signifi cant fact, as cold and solid as a chunk of pahvocrystic ice, is just what our correspondent again re minds us of, and what we have often remarked in these columns that trusts are as common in Free Trade England as in Protectionist America. Trusts have been formed in nearly all the great industries of Great Britaiu, until today, to use an historic phrase, the kingdom is "plastered all i over" with them. "Wherefore, then, j should John the Pot call Jonathan ; the Kettle black: f. 1 , e t i as we recentl' had occasion to ob serve, despite all the formations of trusts, the number of factories has increased from oo0,000 in 1S90 to 1100,000. in 190071 per cent., or three and a half times as fast as the population has increased and our foreign trade, especially in exports of manufactured sioods, has also in creased at an enormous rate. There is.no indication of similar increases in British manufactures and trade. And it makes all the difference in I the world whether industrial and : commercial prosperity Is increasing j.ue answer may pernaps oe round ,,re that tneir hfarls iire a right, but i THE DALLES - - - OREGON in another of our correspondent's . tbeir stomachs are unable to digest food, j a General Banking Business transacted I shrewd observations that is, that it Kodol Dyspepsia Cure digests what yon I Deposits received, cubject to Sight is by no means certain that the num- eiit a,ul Prevents the formation of gas ; c dieda prompth ' i r c . , ! which makes the stomach press aga nst ber of mamifacturin" concerns has , , T , , remitted on dav of collection. . . . . ! the heart. Wlirut Trailu. Wheat continues to weaken here, sayb ; the Portland Commercial Ueview, in j sympathy with tho steady decline going on in Europe. Local prices have reached : a low level, yet in spitoof present cheap ness the demand cannot be said to have been stimulated thereby. Trading is very inactive, partly owing to difficulty perienced by exporters in placing cargoes i on profitable terms, and partly due to'j small offerings. Wheat remaining un-, sold appears to be in strong hands, and the prospects aro that hohiern of large : parcels will wait until spring before! marketing. Many have confidence, that when the present eiormniis stocks in sight E tet and in Europe are whittled ' down by the normal consumptive de mand there will Ijh a reaction In prices, and the result will justify the cost of carrying gram for several months. In the meantime exporters are paving at-1 tentlnn to business in hand and giving 1 chartered tonnage quick dispatch upon j arrival. Future wants aro fairly well! anticipated, and whatever trading is being done is almost entirely to meet requirements of fur-dietant ships. It is not necessary for us to emphasize the fact that the wheat market is very weak, nor to give reasons for the condition. The weakness Is known to all, anil the reasons are fully given in oar foreign markets. Prices have fallen several rents per bushel during the week, and Walla . i ,i i NY alia is reported to have sold as low as 32 cents per bushel.
