"Well, what about
Alaska, which is a:
united States territory
Rico?
The same congress which passed
the Porto Rico act, imposing tem
porarily a tariff there which is not
uniform throughout the United
States, passed also the Alaska act,
imposing an elaborate system of
excise taxes peculiar to that ter
ritory, and consequently not uniform
throughout the United States.
If one of these two acts is uncon
stitutional, so is the other. If one
is an instance of taxation without
representation, so is the other. If
Porto Rico is treated "as if it weie
an alien latid," so is Alaska. If one
territory is subjected to "government
without the consent of the governed,"
so is the other. If there is any out
rage, or departure from American
principles, or indication of the deciy
of republican institutions in one case, '
so is there in the other case.
Why not he honest and denounce
the republican party for "imperial
ism" in Alaska if you are going to
denounce it for 'imperialism" in
