IN DANGER
A riot to Assassinate the President
Spanish and Cuban Conspiracy.
Xkw Yokk, July 11. The World says:
"A plot to assassinate President Mc
Kinlcy tins been truBtrated. It wbb
concoctud by u group of Spanish and
Cuban conspirators who had headquar
ters In New York.
"One of the plotters weakened and
runt warning letter to a member of the
republican national committee. The
letter was pinned in the hands of Secre
tary Charh'M Dick, who referred it to
Chairman Odell, of the New York state
committee, for investigation. Chairman
Well engaged a detective, who speedily
verified certain allegations made in the
warning letter. Thereupon Mr. OJell
reported to Secretary Dick, who laid all
the facts before Chairman Mark Hanna.
"Mr. Odoll's. report causes great alarm
among the president's close friends and
advisers. Mr. Odell made it plain that
tie regarded the plot as a matter of the
utmost Bt'rinttsness, and urged Hint ex
treme precautions bu taken to keep the
1'reBident out of harm'e reach.
"Messors. Dick and Hanna laid the
whole matter before the l'resident be
fore he departed for Canton, Ohio.
They instructed Mr. Odell to continue
hie investigation, and cautioned him to
work with the utmost secrecy.
"To a World reporter lust night Mr.
Odell admitted that he and certain
members of the national committee had
discovered n plot to assassinate the
President."

AsiOj:,i, Or., July 10. The fish oil
works of Deforce, located in the lower
harbor, was wrecked this afternoon by
the explosion of the boiler. Jack Shaw,
an emp'oye, was killed immediately.
Chris Keutx, another employe, is be
lieved to have been drowned, and the
engineer, Maurice M. Moore, is in the
hospital this evening. At the time
there weie four white men and four
Chinamen in the building. Mr. De
force hud been there a half-hour pre
viously, but had liifl son take him aBliorc
o his home before the accident occurod.
The accident Is said to have been due to
to a defective boiler. The factory was
h'tiniy destroyed.

Hospital hero tonight, and before his
death ho made the statement that he
had no knowledge of the cause of the
explosion. The boiler at the time had
but sixty-five pounds of steam. His
death was dne to internal injuries.

D. Gage, of Company C, who was
drowned in the Willamette river Sun-
j day afternoon, had not been recovered
I at a late hour last night, though a thor
ough search fias been made with the
usual apptianccH. The fact that the
body is uaked causes difiiculty in recov
eriiiL', it as it will roll much easier,
and grappling would not take hold so
readily.
Sergeant Sam R Stott, of Sampler,
whose leg was broken by the fall of
his horse Sunday afternoon, is getting
along well, and is as cheerful as the
circumstances will allow.

Shanghai, July 10. News from official
sources was received at 10 o'clock last
night to the effect that the empress had
June 30 resumed the reins of govern
ment, and appointed Yung Ln prime
minister. It is said that she sent a die
patch to Nankin by courier route at the
rate of one hundred miles per day,
thanking the Viceroys of the Yangtse
Kiang provinces for their loyalty, and
recommending that they protect foreign
ers at any cost.
Washington, July 10. The secretary
of state has received a dispatch from
Mr. Goodnow, United StateB Consul at
Shanghai, stating tiiat it is given out by
the governor of Shan Tung that the le
gations were standing on July 5, and
that the outlaws were dispersing. Mr.
Goodnow adds that this statement dees
not obtain general credenca.
Washington, July 10. General Mac
Arthur cables the war department that
the Fourteenth Infantry and the Fifth
Artillery will leave on Friday for Taku.
Other troops are being Eent to replace
these.
Tien Tsin, July 3. It is reported
from Chinese sources that foreigners at
Pekin have taken possession of the
Prince's palaces, opposite and com
manding the British Legation, and that
the native Christians have been install
ed therein.
London, July 10. Chinese official
sources furnished another surprise to
day, in announcing that the Dowager
EmpresB, who iiad been rpported within
two weeks dead, lied, poisoned and
hopelessly mad, has resumed' the reins
of power. The date is given is Juno 30,
the same on which the wholesale mas
sacre of foreigners is aliened to have oc

St. Loi'is, July 10. The boycott,
which hurt the Transit Company con
siderably during the recent contest, was
renewed to day, and wagons are again
carrying passenger (especially in the
north and south sides. There lias been
no trouble reported. Donations for the
fund to buy wagons for the strikers'
'bus line are again being vigorously so
licited. "Before tho strike was declared oil',"
said Treasurer Isaacs, of the executive
board, "we had 330 wagons in commis
sion. Wo have not disposed of any, and
we expect to largely increase the num
ber." .

Monday, July 9. An extended recon
naissance today resulted in the discovery
that the Boers had evacuated all their
positions around Senekal. Numbers
appear to have gone towards Ficksbnrg,
and the remainder in the direction of
Bethlehem. The British commanders
express the opinion that the retirement
of the Boers foreshadows a speedy end
of the war in this section of the
country.

Morse, an aged and absolutely helpless
patient in the Agnew's Insane Asylum,
was slowly boiled to death in a bath tub
in the men's ward of that institution
last night. He was placed in a bath
tub, and after the hot water was turned
on the attendant left the room for n
towel, forgot his patier.t and did not re
turn until the imbecile was fearfully
burned.
