Bto- In a, totter received recently, Lieut. Wallace M. Craigie, Seventh United States infantry, now stationed at Cape Nome, Alaska, in charge of an army substation, snys:: "Cape Nome, according to the old timers, will be tho greatest mining camp in the world. Nome City, as it is now called, is right on the coast of Behrhig sea, and extends for some miles along the shore. Along the beach the miners rock out gold and make from $5 to $50 or more a day one man. This sounds like a statement that ad mits of doubt, but it is a fact. One man told me himself he had worked with three others for 14 days, and they had rocked out just $0,000, all hard-eiirneil gold, but they hnd it to prove the state ment. Then up along the several creeks -Anvil, Discovery, Snow Gulch etc. the v ield is really enormous. The famous claim here is known as No. 1 on l)iscoery, nmMias turned out about $1,000,0011. A few days ago a nugget weighing 30 ounces was found, and about a month ago one weighing a little over 19 ounces was taken from the sluice boxes on the same claim. Some men have a centrifugal pump down on the beach below the town, nnd hau' sluice boxes running back to the soil called tundra by the natives, which if filled with fine gold of a very pure quality. "The tiling that impressed me most was that in less than n month after the town started'the 'diggings' was the circulating medium, and valued at $1C an ounce, although no otUeial ntsa.v had been made. Men go out with theii rockers and pans, and come back tc town, and eat and drink, and pay foi it with the result of the day's diggings There are numerous propositions t interest men of capital, such as a good water supply system, electric light plants, and the man who can lay a trolley s.stem up to the mines for transporting freight and supplies ha. the greatist and surest business en ture of ull. These are now carried b pack trains and freight wagons. l)og. are also 'iscd, they being able to earn about 10 pounds each.
