PARTY LOYALTY ABO VE FRIES D
SHIP. The man who allows himself to be
beguiled by clever speeches from
democrats, into believing that the
democratic party will carry the
election in June, will wonder at his
guilelessness when the votes are
counted, and kick himself for throw,
ing away his vote on principles he
finds to be things of the past, says
the Pendleton Tribune. It is im
possible to eliminate the personal
element in a count' election, among
men who have known each other
for a number of years. This fact
must be met and contended with as
far as possible, but the new man has
not "that obligation of friendship
upon him and can vote straight for
bis ticket. We do not condone
voting for any man on an opposite
ticket but accept it ns a fact that
men do such things, even when their
own party principles are much at
stake. There are times vhen it may
be done better than now, among re
publicans particularly. This is a
year when party lo3alty is above all
friendships. Oregon, as has bjen
repeated, strikes the key note of the
campaign throughout the entire
country. Let a single county in this
state go democratic and it weakens
tbe effect of republicanism on tbe
United States. Bryan and his fol
lowers, wiil make the most of ever
item in their favor. Jf one democrat
is elected in any count' they will
boast of it, and if several are elected
they will claim the entire county.
The results from constable .to bu
preme judge will be added together
nud as big an account credited to
democracy as it will be within the
power of democrats and populists to
create. Were it not presidential
year it would not be so necessary
or men to vole for republican
principles instead of personal friends,
but the possibilities of a change of
policy in the administration of our
government should not be allowed to
gain an iota of strength. One couuty
ofllcer placed in the court house by
tbe democrats is too great an
achievement to allow, and can be
prevented if republicans vote solidly
for their ticket, which aside from
political reasons is well worthy of
Ibeir undivided support. '
BANKING ON IGNORANCE.
Tbe tUrk ignorance of the Baker
City Democrat or tbe confidence
with which it banks on the ignorance
of its readers is conclusively demon
strated by tbe following, which lately
appeared in the idilorial columns of
that paper. The only comment
necessary at this time is that the ship
subsidy bill has never been before
the lower house of congress for the
action of Messrs. Tongue and Mostly,
and consequently they have no ex
planation of their action to make tp
anybody.
The Hon. Malcolm A. Moody k&d
the Hon. Thomas H. Tongue, our
present representatives, are called
upon to explain their action in the
proposed ship subsidy steal that Is
being engineered through congress
by Mark Hannn. For political effect
the measure has been temporarily
dropped hut will be revived after
the presidential election and made a
law, unless tbe people arise and crush
these plaint tools who wear the brand
and collar of the Hanna ring. The
Standard Oil Company, and other
criminal trusts of their like, hope to
rob tbe public of millions of dollars
by the passage of the ship subsidy
bill. The Oregonian has denounced
the steal in strong terms. Their lack
of consideration for the people's in
terests and their friendly actions for
tbe trust kings is sufficient to condemn
Tongue and Moody to oblivion.
There is but one wnj- to thwart the
machinations of that imperious
rogue, Mark Hanna. defeat his hench
men at the polls. Voters, it is with
in your province to protect your
selves against the most gigantic
robbery ever attempted upon tbe
American people. Elect Tongue and
Moody and the Meal is by your sanc
tion; defeat then:, and Hanna is
powerless t" irk his infamous
designs. V . tor Smith and Daly.
Tbe Dal.cs-CeliIo boat railway

not, has been a stalking horse long
enough for killing off or postponing
tbe only practicable permanent im
provement, a canal and locks, seems
to have been abandoned for good.

Automobile on (lie Torrpnth.
The haulage of boats by automobile
along the canal between T5rtisels and
Charleroi has demonstrated, after a
long trial, that the new method of
towing is three times quicker than
horse traction. The automobile de
rives its energy from a railway com
posed of six lines, three of high ten
sion (0.0:0 volts) and three of low
tension, on which the trolleys run.
The electricity is furnished by three
dynamos, each of 12l horse power.
