Cruel Knife!
It is absolutely useless to expect n
Burgical operation to cure cancer, or
any other blood disease. The cruelty
of such treatment is illustrated in the
alarming number of deaths which re
sult from it. The disease is in the
blood, and hence can not bo cut out.
Nine times out of ten the surgeon's
knife only hastens death.

The Benefit of Npraytn Trult Trees
Conclusively Drumus t rated.
At the meeting of the State Board of
Horticulture, winch was hold in Port
land Tuesday, the elficieiier of spraying
fruit trees for the extermination of the
codhn moth was most conclusively dem
onstrated. Most satisfactory results, it
was shown, were produced where the
spray was properly prepared, and the
spraying persisted in. Ollwell Brce., of
New York, who have ICO acres of apple
trees, epray them systematically five
'times during the season, and have se-
cured OS per cent of clean fruit thereby,
onlv 2 per c;nt contain'm" worms. Thev
eo!d $H,000 worth of npples lust year.
H, C. Savers, of Iiood Itiver, reported,
as the result of thorough spraying, the
securing of 95 per cent of clean fruit,
'with only 5 per cent showing vroriue.
E. L. Smith, of Hood River, reported
also 03 psr cent ol clean fruit as the re
an!t o' systematic spraying.
LaSalie Bros., of Albany, who have
fifty acres uf apple trees, by persistent
spraying saved 90 percent of their fruit.
Many others reported tqually satisfac
tory results from following this plan
All these fruit-raisers Lave used the
particular spray recommended bv the
board, and, in view of such testimony,
the conclusion was unavoidably reached
that the contention tha spraying is in
effectual is fallacious as well as absurd.
