FRIDAY - FEBRUARY 9, 1900
NEBRASKA'S INTEREST REDUC
TION. A Populist paper in Nebraska calls
attention to the reduction of interest
on state securities in that quarter,
and the coincident advauce in ihe
premium on them. It speaks of the
time when Nebraska's state warrants
"bearing 7 per cent were selling at a
discount ranging from 3 to per
cent," and declares that though "the
interest rate has been reduced from
7 to 5 per cent, and again from ." to
4 per cent, these warrants now com
maud a liberal premium in the open
market, and anxious investors are
never wanting." It adds naively
that "this is not such a bad showing,
considering that we have only a
farmer at the head of the state gov
eminent" The farmer governor is
tbe Populist whom the Demo-Pop
aggregation elected in 1808, William
J. Poynter, and who will probably
be succeeded by a Republican chosen
in 1D00.
The reduction in interest rates and
the increase in tbe premium on state
securities which tbe Nebraska Pop
paper refers to is not confined to any
one state. Tiie same thing can be
found in all the Western slates.
Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa,
Minnesota and nil the other Western
states have it, whether their govern
ors be Republicans, Democrats or
Populists. In a smaller degree the
same thing is true in all the Eastern
states as well as in the West. The
reason why it is not true to such a
large extent in the East as it is in
the West is because the interest in
the East in recent years has never
been so high as it has been in the
"West, nnd, therefore, the chance for
a reduction in the rate has not been
so great. In one degree and another,
however, the decline in interest has
takenplace all over the country.
Of course, the assumption that the
"farmer" governor of Nebraska has
had any band in bringing the interest
rate in that quarter down is
too
fantastic to be believed eve
person intimating it. The election
of a Populist to any important olcei?"(r!J;earlburn' and al1 foru,a of dys-
would have n teiulenoy to put in
terest up rather than down if his
election showed n drift toward Popu
lisin in the country at large. Interest
is going down because the Republican
party is in power, because it has
beaten the silver folly and established
the gold standard, because it is going
to put the gold standard so firmly in
tbe statutes this winter that s base
woaey president and house of ropre
eatatives oould not uku it out, nnd
because, moreover, the prospect for
tbe Republican party to continue in
strol of tbe government for a long
Ib tbe future is excellent.
Jkjr' defeat, which meant tbe'
ovcrtlirow of repudiation nnd the
confusion nnd demoralization of
the repudintors, nnd the success of the
Republican putty, are the reasons
for the lowering of the rate of interest
and the advance of the premiums on
state warrants in Nebraska and the
similar tendency of things in all the
rest of the country. The liest day's
work which the American people
ever did in the past third of a
century was that which they trnns.
acted on that November day in 180G,
when they smashed Brynnism.
