man-Review. But the universities,
normal schools and high schools of
the West and East have failed to
grasp the situation. To teach suc
cessfully in the islands of the Philip-
pines a knowledge of Spanish is j
required. To transact business knowl
edge of Spanish is imperative. In
Puerto Rico and Cuba it is even
more necessary than in the Philip
pines. Inasmuch as students in high
schools and normal schools seek a
practical education and hope to fit
themselves for earning their liveli
hood, why not make the study of
Spanish a part of the course ?
Spanish is easily mastered. The
language is far less difficult of pro
nunciation than French and Ger
man, and will be of far more prac
tical beneflt to those who enter
commercial and educational life.
Especially on the seacoast it will be
of inestimable advantage to business
men. Government positions go beg.
ging for want of bright young men
and women who have failed to
master the tongue of the new colonial
citizens. Two years' study in any
school, if the system is thorough,
should be ample for the average
student to learn to read, write and
Bpeak the Spanish language. With
the narrowing of business openings
in the United Slates to lhe poor
young man or woman the opening
afforded by the colonies will prove
an inestimable boon. Jt is strange
that the direstors of educational in
stitutions have not already Included
the study of Spanish in their cur
riculum. The disappointments of the Klon
dike are to be repeated this year oa
the bleak sands of Cape Nome
Alaska is a far land, strike news is a
long time in reaching the centers of
population, and there arc always men
enough and to spare to pick up the
rich claims before the arrival of the

Cape Nome being in American ter
ritory, the placer grounds are subject
to the American mining laws. These
permit oue mn to stake a creek from
one end to the other, and hold it
with little or no woik for nearly two
years. Consequently every foot of
