MoDiiEit Rivkk, Cape Colony, Dec. 20.
The British naval guns command the
whole Boers' position, and possoBS the
exact range of every stone and bush
They frequently plnut shells with good
advautugo in the midst of the group of
Boers. The Burghers aro reported to be
returning home for Christmas.
Recent arrivals from Jacobsdal report
that notwithstanding ttie Boer success,
the Free Staters do not expect ultimate
victory. They complain of tho over
bearingconductof General Cronje'e men,
who are alleged to be better fed and
posted in the Biifeat positions. Tbe
Transvaalers do not conceal their sus
picions of possible defection of Free
Staters and threaten to shoot them at
the least sign of wavering. Tho Free
Staters are said to regard subjection to
the TranBvaal as more to be feared than
subjection to Great Britain.
PitKTOUiA, -Doc. 18. General Joubert
has recovered, and returned to the front
today.
London, Dec. 20. Tho latest cable
dispatches liom South Africa show tho
situation ut tho front is practically un
changed. With the exception of desul
tory artillery practice, to which tho
Boors did not reply, the Britieli continue
to murk time. The Boers heavily bom
barded Lndysmith for a couple of hours
December 10, tho day after the battle of
Tugeln river, but littledamago won done.
Thoy killed one man aud wounded two
men of the garrison.
Advices from Cape Town eay tho New
Hjalanders, with General French at
Naauwpoort, were in a tight corner De
cember 18. They were nearly surrounded
by Boers, and retired under u hail of
bullets tired at short range, but sustained
only little loss. Among the Boers killed
at Storuiberg were many of that locality
who had joined the Freo State force.
Several newspaper correspondents
have returned to Capo Town from
Alodder river, apparently conOrniing the
belief that an immediate advance of the
British is not projected.
