Representative Cushnian Introduces a
Hill Providing for Lighthouses
on the Coast of Alaska.
Wahiiixcito.v, Dec. 11. Tho firBt day'a
debate on tho financial bill in the house
developed one important fact. The East
ern Democrats realize that they are go
iug to certain destruction in opposing a
cold-standard measure. Another fact is
that tho Democrats are extremely weak
in their opposition speeches. The only
charge they seem ablo to make, and tho
only argument they biing fortii, is that
tlioe) who are now supporting tho bill
voted for the gold-bond bill recom
mended by Cleveland and voted for the
Hherrunn law, and that ib the sum of the
Democratic reason why tho preterit bill
should not pasB.
Tho sound-money Democratic con
stituents of Eastern Democrats elected
last year are making it extremely un
comfortable for the men who are oppos
ing the -hill. Theae Democrats are told
that they wore elected on platforms that
abandoned and did not mention the
Chicago platform, and that they can
count no longer for support on the gold
Democrats if they refuse to assist in
eouud financial legislation.
But the Southern and Western Demo
crats refuse to concede anything. The
leaders have determined to fight tho bill
&9 a (Kirty, and nre now devoting them
selves to making campaign material for
Bryan and that particular element which
mill harps on free Bilver.
Lighthouses for Alaska.
Aflur a conference with the chief of
tiie lighthouse boaid, Representative
Cuelunan has concluded to introduce a
bill appropriating !500,000 for the
erection of suitable lighthouses and
eignals along the Alaskan coast. While
this eum will not begin to supply a suf
licitnt number of aids to navigation, it
will ho a starter, and it is hoped that
further appropriations will follow. Mr.
Cuelunan intendB to insert n provision
in the bill making the Alaskan coast,
together with the Puget sound shore,
from Gape Flattery, around to the
boundary line, n separate lighthouse dis
trict, to be known us district No. 17.

A startling incident, of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, waB the

"I was in a most dreadful condition. My

tongue coated, pain continually in back
and sides, no appetite gradually grow
ing weaker day by day. Three pliysl
ciana had given me up. Fortunately, a
triend advised 'Electric BltterB1 ; aud 'to
my great joy and surprise, tho first
bottlo made a decided improvement. I
continued their use for three weeks, and

HORRIBLE DEVICE
OF THE FILIPINOS
They Construct Pitfalls, Wherein Are
Set Upright Sharpened Bamboo
Poles.
New Vobic, Dec. 12. A special to tho
Tribune from Washington says: In tho
hospital reports which reached the war
department from Manila is chronicled
tho first casualty due to falling into a
Tagal pitfall which contained the
horrible device of bamboo posts set
firmly in the hole and sharpened at the
top (or the purpose of impaling the un
wary. The American troops have fre
quently found such traps on the line
of march, and especially in front of in
surgent trenches. Ordinarily the trapB
have been Bimply deep holes in the
jungle covered with long irrass, and al
though soldiers have frequently fallen
iuto them, no serious injury has resulted.
On October 25, when lorty-five men of
company i, Iwneteentn mlantry, were
engaged in a reconnaissance In chasing
small band of Taguls from some
trenches, Private Peters Karl plunged
into Etich a pit with its sharpened
bamboos, and had his foot and leg
buveroly lacerated, which put him out of
service. Fortunately he did not tumble
headlong into the trap, for if he had, in
the opinion of the surgeon", his wounds
must certainly have been fatal.

QUAY'S CHANCES
FOR DEFEAT
Apathy of His Friends Makes the Out
look Somewhat Ominous Too
Many Names in Noncommittal
Column.
New York, Dec. 12. A special to the
Herald from Washington says:
Apathy among Senator Quay's friends
is making the outlook in the senate
rather ominous for him. Senators
Chandler and Penrose appear to be the
only persons who are doing any active
canvassing in bis behalf, and they are
by no means encouraged by the progress
they aro making.
The lack of interest was forcibly illus
trated in the case of a senator who was
approached with the suggeston that he
inake-A strong speech in behalf of the
constitutional tight of a governor to ap
point wiien a legislature had failed to
elect. This influential senator had
spoken in behalf of Senator Corbett and
was urged to repeat the same orguments
that he advanced iu that gentleman's
behalf. He has declined the request on
the ground that when he supported Mr.
Corbett, both Senators Quay and Pen
rose refused to vote to seat him. The
senator stated that ho would vote to seat
Mr. Quay, but he did not see how Penn
sylvania's senators could consistently in
sist upon his taking charge of the case
on the (laor of the senate
It is becoming more manifest every
day that Mr. Quay has considerable can
vassing to do to maka his eeat in the
senate a certainty.
There are too many names on the non
committal column to make the outcome
certain for him at this time. Mr. Quay
is expected here on Wednesday, when it
may be expected that he will work hard
for himself. One of the plans hia friends
are talking about is to induce u sufficient
number of Mr. Quay's Democratic friends
to absent themselves on the day when
the final vote is taken, and in this way
assure a majority vote in his favor.

OUR IRON ORE -SUPPLY
IS SHORT
It Will Take Two Hundred
Handle the Cargoes of
gaged for Importation.
Vessels to
Iron En-
PiiiLADKi-riiiA, Doc. 11. Vessels char
tered and other preparatory signs of ac
tivity at this port indicate that the year
1900 will bo one of unusually largo im
ports of iron ore. It is eaid that 200
vessels will be required to load cargoes of
iron and copper destined for Phila
delphia from Cuba aud ttio European
ports. The ore beds in the hike legions
and other mineral territory in the United
States are eaid to be totally inadequate
to meet the demand for iiianufaetuied
iron and 6teel products the coming year.
It Is reported that 200,000 tons of iron
ore havo been engaged fur shipment to
this city from Spanish and other
Mediterranean porta alone. A large
amountof these shipments, it is believed,
are destined for theCarnegle Steel Com
pany. There has been a Vevlval of the
Cuban ore trade since the close of hos
tilities in the island, as is indicated by a
number of recent shipments from the
mines at Jarugua.
Iu addition to ore shipments, there are
other Indications of a year of increased
uctivlty at the port of Philadelphia. In
anticipation of some of the expected
activity tha Pennsylvania railroad 1b
making important extensions at Green
wich Point for increased wharfage
facilities.
