WEDNESDAY
DEC. 6, 1S99
REBUKED BY ORGANIZED LABOR
The Boise Typographical union
has done a very sensible and very
meritorious thing jn refusing to re
move from its roll of honorary mem
bership the name of Gov. Steunen
berg, says the Spokesman-Review.
Prior to his election as gflvernor
Sir. Steuncnberg was a wage-earner
and a union man, being a member of
the Boise Typographical union. By
association, practice and interest, bis
sympathies were therefore with law
abiding organized labor; but his oath
of olWce, bis duty to the state of
Idaho, and bis sense of right and
justice forbade an' catering to or
weakness with the lawless band of
Molly Maguires who were terrorizing
the Couur d'Alenes, murdering in
offensive citizens, blowing up mills
and concentrators and committing
countless other atrocities under cover
of masks. These murderous organi
zations had no more right to ily tie
Hag of law-respecting labor unionism
than a pirate ship would have to lly
the flag of the United States, and
when brought to account for their
crimes were entitled to no more con
sideration from la -abiding working
men than a pirate crew to the
protection of the Sag they had falsely
Jlaunted.
The Boise union, after making a
thorough investigation through a
committee, has adopted resolutions
which are a slinging rebuke to Boyce
and his lawless followers in the Ctuur
d'Alenes. It says:
"Resolved, That Boise City Typo
graphical union, No. 271, has made
such investigations as satisfy it that
the said action of Governor Slcuen
berg was necessary to secure the
protection of life and property and
to the maintenance of peace m the
Ctuur d'Alenes, and for the punish'
ment of those responsible for murder
and the destruction of property in
the said Ctuur d'Alene section
Therefore bo it
"Kenolved, That the Boise City
Typograulcal union, No. 271, de
clines to remove the name of Gov
ernor Steuenenbcrg from its roll of
membership."
To this conviction will come any
law-abiding labor union which will
search out the facts and compare
them with Boyce's false statements.
dent's message is one of tho ablest
and most comprehensive state papers
ever presented to congress," etc., etc.
Tho Democratic and Populistic pa
pers will all run it down as weak,
washy, verbose, and no good. And
all of them will express these opinions
without having read it.
