COSMOPOLITAN COIN, Talk of Introducing One Into Inter national Business. Snch a Departure IIm Ilecn Viewed with Favor by Commercial and Danklna- Men for Some Time. It will not he a surprise to any who are at all familiar with the good qualities of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, to know that people everywhere take pleasure in relating their experience in the use of that splendid medicine and in telling of the benefit they havo re ceived from it, of bad colds it lias cured, of threatened attacks of pneumonia it line averted and of the children it has saved from attacks of croup and whoop ing cough, It Is a grand, good medicine. For many years commercial men o nil nationalities have spoken and writ ten on the subject of the introduction of a system of coinage which should have a universal standard. The proposition hns fulled to meet with success on ac count of the difficulty in persuading the people of different countries to aban don their own systems of coinage, which appear to them part and parcel of themselves as much as their lan guage Itself. "The time seems approaching," said n financier, "when it will be' possible nnd perhnps advisable for the great nations of the earth to meet in conven tion and adopt a coin which shall be cosmopolitan, the weight and fineness of which might be determined by the convention nnd the minting of which might be intrusted to .1 body of ex perts made up of representatives from all the nations who care to enter into the project. It may be some time be fore this comes about, yet it would greatly facilitate international busi ness, especially since large internation al transactions have come to be quite common. Such n coin would probably never supplant the coin local to the various countries in which also the cos mopolitan coin became current, yet with educntion taking such strides as it seems to be doing everywhere it ought not to be difficult to instruct the chil dren in schools in the table of the pro posed coin nnd give them practical il lustrations in its use. Such a coin would not be welcomed enthusiastical ly by small traders in different coun tries who are wont to profit by the unfamiliarity of travelers with the coin of the realm and their natural bewilder ment in attempting to fix in their minds the comparative value of articles con sidered in relation to the money they have always handled, but it would be a boon to the great traveling world's public, to our globe-trotting commer cial travelers, to opulent tourists and to indigent emigrants. The current is surely in the direction of a universal harmonizing of commercial interests ind the elimination of all the little lucky cards and a relegation of all things and people in trade to a sound basis of intrinsic merit.'' "The, subject of a cosmopolitan coin is not a new one," said a member of a banking firm. "In some of the aspects af the case it appears to he very desir able. It has been suggested that the various commercial nations agree upon a gold coin, of uniform weight and fine ness, to be given n name which would be understood in most of the countries agreeing to its coinage. Each country is to coin its own pieces and to be re sponsible for their accuracy. The coin Is to have on one side the stamp or legend of the country coining it nnd on the other its universal name. It will readily be seen that with such a coin in universal use, both in practice nnd ac counts, commercial transactions would no doubt be greatly facilitated. 1 do not look, however, for its early accom plishment. Its desirability is not suffi cient to overcome the long established customs of the various countries so as to lead them to relinquish the names, nnd styles of their various coins. Con servative England, for instance, with its cumbrous system, is not likely to relinquish Its pounds, shillings nnd pence and adopt the decimal system ct France, Germany, Italy nnd the United States. And it is not likelv that the latter would give up their quick- nnd hnndy decimal system for that of Eng land. On the whole, the iden is a very good one, but. like many other good tilings like the proposed metrical system, for instance impossible of ac complishment for vnrious reasons at present."
