WARS AT LOXG DISTANCE.
The fierce character of the war in
the Transvaal, despite the assertions
that it is conducted along lines
adopted by nations calling themselves
civilized, has over-shndowed opera
tions in the Philippines, where there
is daily fighting and against more
tremendous odds than General White
encounters at Ladysmith, says the
Spokesman-Review, There are daily
skirmishes in Luzon and ever' cable
brings the news of Americans shot
down, of Filipinos destroyed in the
trenches. New regiments depart
daily on transports for Manila, and
there is still active recruiting going
on in the United States to fill the
skeletons of regiments formed in
the Philippines. Temporarily the
American people seem to forget that
America still has n war of her own,
which will require the expenditure of i circulars und testmonmi. Address,

these advances possess the same
significance now that they did a
twelvemonth ago. Perhaps the people
are sated with news of bloody deeds
and have npretite for none but
accounts of terrible slaughter. They
have lost eagerness for news from
the front, perhaps for another reason
the return of their volunteers from
danger and privation.
"With the arrival of all regiments
at Manila the United States will have

equal in point of courage nnd fight

Sir Redvers Buller. The rivalry
between news centers will then be
more keen. It may be possible to
record the capture of several thous

of apparently impregnable entrench

If any of the European nations
believe that story that the United
States is seeking a "zone of influence"
in China they know very little about
the sentiment of the American people.
The United States wants no territory
oo the mainland of Alia. It 'would
accept none of it as a gift. We have
some valuable islands in Asiatic
waters, the Philippines, but we are
not seeking any territor on the con
tinent in that part of the world. All
the country wants in China is 'the!
continuance of the "free-for-all" con
ditions which have prevailed hitherto-
These we probably will have.
But we have no dcsiic for possession
of any part of China.

There is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all otbe diseases put
together, and until the last few years
was supposed to be incurable. For a
great many years doctors pronounced it
a local disease, and prescribed local
remedies, and by constantly fuillng to
cure with local treatment, pronounced
it incurable. Science has proyen catarrh
tobe a constitutional disea-3, and there
fore requires constitutional treatment.
Hall's Catarrah Cure, manufactured by
