HEROES FOR PRESIDENT.
The association of Admiral Dewey's
name with tbe presidency bas
brought forth comments from differ
ent quarters that military or naval
heroes bave rarelv made good na-
tional chief magistrates. As a matter
of fact, tbe real soldiers who bave
lived in tbe White House bave been
among tbe best of presidents.
Among those soldiers who bave
occupied tbe executive chair were
Washington, Jackson, "W. H. Harri
son, Taylor and Grant. For a
century no one bas been disposed to
criticise tbe administration of George
Washington, which was that of a
patriot. Partisanship ran bigh in tbe
days of Andrew Jackson, but tbe
verdict of later j'ears bas been that
in spite of bis rough waj-s, ''kitchen"
cabinet and arbitrary nature, be was
one of tbe sturdiest of Americans
and a credit to bis country.
What Harrison and Taylor might
liave become as presidents was never
lenown, because of untimely decease,
and after them Grant was tbe first
man to be dtawn from tbe ranks of
tbe arrm His administration of
eight years was not of the best, for
it was tbc era of recklessness follow
ing tbe war, when many new men
bad come to the front, and most ot
tbem were on tbe make. Grant, who
had been a Democrat all bis life, be
came tbe Republican candidate in
18C8, largely because the war hud
been brought about by the triumph
of Republicanism in 18G0, and with jstructintr the exhausted digestive or-
no experience of any value outside I?5- It Is the latest discovered digest

friends, even when they were un
worthj', but in spite of mistakes made
during the feverish years from 18C8
to 1874, the general verdict is that
General Grant was an honest man,
one of the best of patriots, and a
hero who never intentionally did a
wrong.
When Dewey's name is mentioned
it la customary to say that he would
be no more successful as president
than was Grant. The two men in
their bringing-up and associations
are wholly different. Grant had had
Homewbat featureless career on tbc
frontier, and for forty years, up to
tbe time of tbe capture of Fuducah
sod later Henry and Donelson, bis
life bad been a conspicuous failure. '
lie knew little of men, manners and
tbe world, even wheu elected to the
presidency. Dewey, on tbe other
basd, bas been brushing up against
tbe world for forty years. He bis
been everywhere, lived for years in
Washington, met statesmen, poli
ticians, diplomats and men of affairs.
He is not tbe raw product Grant was
wben tbe latter came to Washington
and was bailed as tbe greatest man of
bta tine.
Tbe shadows of coming events in-
dicatc that the beads of the two
tickets of 1S9G will again ask for tbc
suffrages of their fellow-countrymen,
but of all the military and naval
heroes of the century, who have
been named for tbc bigb place, there
is probably no otber who by train
ing, associations and experience has
better all-around qualifications for
the presidency iban George Dewey.
