tendent of motive power of tho Now York
Central, and wont to work to provo his
merit. Ho worked enrly and late. He

ployu. Ho did everything ho could to
provo to his father his sorlous iutotitioiiH.
Ho never complained, and never allowed
an opportunity to pass without trying to
seenro a ni-eatnbliebnient of the former
cordial rulutiouB between himself and
Ida father.
It is said further that ho hoped and
believed he had succeodod in gaining his
father' favor. Tho two men did not
discuss the subject, but for hours father
and eon talked cordially at tho Breakers
in Newport, and also in this city.

During the winter of 1897 Mr. James
Reed, one of the leading citizens and
merchants of Clay, Clay Co., VV. Va.,
struck his )eg againBt a cake of ice in
such a manner as to bruise it eeverely.
It became very much swollen nnd pained

without tho aid of crutches. He wnB

gallons of whiskey in bathing it, but
nothing gave any relief until ho began

Woman Correspondent in Male Attire,
Ahiikviux, N. C, Oct. 28. A letter
received bore bv the wife of Bandmaster
Cue, of the Twenty-ninth infantry, U. S
V., says that when tho transport carry
ing the regiment to Mnnila arrived at
Honolulu one of the emploveB of the
ship became very ill, but refused to take
medicine or have the attendance of a
doctor.
Colonol Hardin ordered a Etirgeon to
attend the caao and it was discovered
that tho patient was a woman in male
attire going to the Philippines to re
present an American newspaper. She
refused to disclose her name or the
paper Bhe would represent.

Hill has contracted in Englanu for the
construction of two immense steamships

7C0 feet, and 20,000 tons burden.

He Took Tax Money.

II. J, Day has been found to ;o a uu

Friday on business, and telegraphed bis
wife from Portland Sunday, that ho
would be home Tuesday. Since that
nothing has been beard of him.
A reward of $100 has been offered for

money taken was tax money collected in
the past two months.
