from thu scene of action in South Africa

ening their position in Natal aud biding
their own time for attack.
Tho Orange Free Stato burghers are

both of which are at their mercy, if they

have secretly proscribed Acker's English Remedy, but it is most gratifying to

Situation at Dundee.
Ladybmihi, Natal, Oct. 17. The
threatened assault upon Glencoe is be
lieved to be a feint in the hope of weak
ening the garrison here and exposing
the towns on the westward. The Boers
are resting, preparatory to completing
their encircling movement for an attack
upon Dundee. They cannot advance
much farttier without coming into cor-
tact with B-itish cavalry, who screen
tho positian. Nevertheless the situation
is such that little fighting ib expected in
the near future in this section apart
trom desultory outpost skirmishes. All

Interior Department Has So Informed
Congressman Jones of Washing
ton. Pendleton, Or., Oct. 17. S. J. Cam
eron, of North Yakima, one of the
wealthiest and heaviest handlers of
sheep in the Northwest, is in Pendleton
today and talked of the status of the ex
clusion of sheep from the lorest re
serves. Mr. Cameron, as a buyer and
seller of sheep, travels throughout the
country extensively, aud finds that the
sentiment is practically unanimous in
Oregon and Washington in opposition to
keeping the sheep from the government
reserves.
Mr. Cameron states that Congress
man Jones, of Yakima, lias received a
letter from Mr. Hitchcock, of the in
terim department at Washington, In
which the assurance is given that sheep
men Will be protected from undesirable
restrictions with reference to the forest
range grazing. Mr. Hitchcock wrote to
the effect that the department had been
misinformed as to tho facts, learning
later of the 'misrepresentation. It had
bten the understanding of the depart
ment officials that the sheepmen had
gone into the reserve contrary to the
provisions of the department's orders,
and had ridden rough shod over the
comtnand-of the eecretarv.
The Yakima sheepmen are well satis
fied with the assurance given In the
letter to Congressmen Jones, and have
a committee at work informing the de
partment as to the facts in the case.
