- OCTOBER 3, 1899
A YEAR THAT BREAKS RECORDS
This is a record-breaking 3'ear for
the United States. The production
of nearly all the principal corn
growing states is so far ahead of all
previous years that the falling off in
some of the minor states will be
more than compensated for, and the
largest aggregate yield in the coun
try's history is now assured, says the
Globe-Democrat. Some of the
authorities place the crop as high as
2,500,000,000 bushels, which would
be far nhoad of all the best years of
the past, the highest previous yield
"being that of 189C, which was put
"by the government's department of
agriculture, after all the returns were
m, at 2,283,875,1C5 bushels. The
wheat crop is believed to have ex
ceeded all former yields exeept that
of 1898.
In nearly every important field of
industry the production is ahead
of r.ny year in the past. The pro
duction of pig iron has been steadity
breaking records for several months,
notwithstanding the large increase in
price. The output of the woolen
nnd cotton factories is apparently in
the lead of all former figures. Rail
road earnings are reflecting these
advances by passing up to higher
ligures than were ever before reached, j
Sank clearances, which have nil along
been recognized as a trustworthy
barometer of business conditions,
Lave passed far beyond ell previous
totals. This is not only true of the
clearances in New York ar.d Chicago,
where they could be affected by the
operations of the speculative ex
changes, but it is true of the other
business centers of the country, large
nnd small.
The government is feeling the
tonic effect of these exhilarating con
ditions. Its gold reserve has passed
far up beyoud the highest line ever
previously touciicd. Moreover, the
tendency in this direction is likely to
continue for a lime, for gold is
coming into the country from Austra
lia, and more of it is likely to soon
start from Europe to us. The treas
ury returns for August, notwith
standing the heavy expenditures due
to the increased army burden, show
a stuplus of over $4,000,000. August,
it is true, is ordinarily a month of
comparatively light disbursements.
The indications are, however, that;
the tax laws will, under the spur of1
the immense business expansion,!
piovide very nearly enough of j
revenue to meet nil the government's
expenditures hereafter, and may
furnish quite onough. In an in
dustrial, Unanclul mid political way,
these are among the greatest days
which the IJnited States has seen.
in 1889 the direct receipts of the
treasury from gold mines were $8,
990,070. Members of the Volksraad
now receive n salary of $G000, or
20 per cent more than the pny of an
American conjressman.
In the twenty-one planks of the
Democratic platform in Ohio not
one refers to state issues, and yet
McLean insists that the contest in
volves no national questions. The
gixth plank runs thus: "We are op
posed to entangling nllinncQ? with
foreign kingdoms and empires."
Secretary Hay knocked it out in
short order.
HE HOPES TO SE
CURE VINDICATION
En can Decided to Appeal His Case to
Congress for Consideration at the
Coming Session of That Body.
New York, Oct. 2. A epecial to the
Herald from Washington ears: Brig
adier-General Charles P. Enpan, who
was suspended from rank and duty as a
result of the language employed by htm
before the war investigating: commission,
hopes to obtaio vindication from congress
during the coming session.
General Eagan is at Washington to
settle matters connected with the furni
ture of the liousn tie occupied before his
departure for Hawaii. It is understood,
however, that he is trying to en'ist the
sympathies of members of congreea in
order to obtain a congressional investiga
tion of the beef scandal.
There is no intention on the- part of
the administration to restore General
Engan to duty. It fact, it is desired that
he should apply for retirement in order
that the president may appoint Colonel
Weston, now acting coinmiss .try-general,
a brigadier and commiseary-gener.il of
subsistence. The president is anxious
to do all lie can for the colonel. During
General Eagau'e stay here a determined
effort will be made to induce him to
apply for retirement, but tunny think he
will not do so, in view of tiie fact that
he is now drawing full pay, and would
on'v receive three-nnartere on tne
retired list.
