In 1890 the United Slates census
returned G2,C22,250 people. Calcu
lations as to the population next year
range from 74.000,000 to S0,000,000.
The Spokesman-Review sajs: In
this connection it is interesting to
recall the remarkable predictions
made in the early part of the century
y the noted agriculturist and math
ematician, Elkanah "Watson. By
careful attention to the science of
general avernses, Mr. "Watson com
puted the population of the country
for successive decades for nearl3' n
century ahead with an accuracy that
is almost astounding. His calcula
tions were within 1 per cent of what
the actual count proved to be for
iive succeeding decades. Only in
18C0 was his prediction more than
100,000 out of the way, end his cal
culations had been made before
1820.
After the civil war "Watson's
ligures began to varj from the actual
enumeration. He predicted 70,000,
000 for 1890 and 100,235,985 for
1900, which is probably from 20 to
25 per cent more than the census
count will show. Possibly if the
war had not occurred his estimates
might have been verified, for that
conflict; with the killing of thousands
of men, suspension of family life,
and the falling off of immigration
conspired to decrease the annual per
centage of growth from 2 to 3
per cent.
The growth for 1890 to 1900 will
not be so remarkable as it was for
the previous decade, for there was
no general financial depression be
tween 1880 and 1890, and the num
ber of immigrants coming to America
in the early 80s was the largest ever
recorded. During the ten years end
ing June 30, 1890, the newcomers
numbered 5,24G,G13, while the ag
gregate for the last decade will not
be three fourths of that total. Some
months ago an estimntc based on the
estimates of the governors of the
several states placed the population
of the country at 77,803,231, which
is probably not vcrj far from cor
rect. Nothing could well he more un

simplicity, must appeal to the heart
of the American woman as all
sutlicient in its power to initiate the
happiness of a lifetime and crown
country and posterity with honor.
