THE FALL ELECTIONS.
In .the six states in which there
are to be elections for governor the
campaigns arc well under way. These
states arc Massachusetts, Iowa, Mis
sissippi, Maryland, Kentucky and
Ohio. It is safe to say Hint Massa
chusetts and Iowa will go Republican
and that Mississippi will go Demo
cratic, says the Spokesman-Keview.
Man'land has ordinarily heen Demo
cratic, but at the last election went
Republican, and members of that
party have claimed that such it
would remain. But there seerus to
"be nothing very substantial on which
to base this confidence. The Demo
crats are well organized, under the
leadership of Gorman, a significant

a conflict between Senator Welling
ton and Governor Lowndes are like
ly to make the chances of Democratic
success all the more certain.
Kentucky is nominally Democratic,
"but its present governor is a Repub
Jican, and a part of its electoral vote
was for McKtnley. Moreover, there
is a bolting Democratic ticket which
gives the Republicans reason to
fpol !
cneouraged. The regular Democrats
arc waging a vigorous campaign,
however, and in spite of independent
Democratic secession it is not im-!
probable that Goehel will be elected
-"by a safe majoril'.
In Ohio the campaign has just
opened, and it will bo an extremely
active one for both parties. It is
lielieved that the usual Republican
majority will be cut down, but it is
doubtful if enough of n change can
be effected to insure the election of
JtlcLcan. Ohio is the president's
state, and with all tho inlliicnce that
the administration can exert in favor
of Nash there is a fair probability of:
the latter winning by a small ma
jbi ity.
AH of these elections will be full of
interest, fot the state campaigns are
"being waged largely on national
issues, and from tho results it may lie I

possilile to make predictions as to
the greater contest of next 3'enr.
