One week ? 15 One month 50 One year 6 00 TUESDAY - SEPT. 19. 1899 FALSE INTERVIEWS. A shameless system of lying, cultivated of late by certain news papers, demands general attention Tublic mcu wherever they go are compelled to run the gantlet of abso Jute falsehoods purporting to be interviews. When Dewey touched at Trieste a bogus interview repre sented that he was discussing future war with Germany. Similar fiction was fixed up when he stopped for a few days at Italian and French ports, and the moment he left Gibraltar for home a talk' was in vented in which he is made to ex press broad generalizations about the capacities of the Filipinos. None of these pretended interviews were written by persons who had seen or talked with Dewey. The stuff they cooked up is as easy to write in a back room in New York as in Naples, or Nice or London. It is a product of the reckless mendacity that will write and print anything to produce a desired effect. These creature?, traced bark to their base, would probably be found drawing pay from the Tagal secret service fund. Dewey would have to make a fresh denial every day if he followed up these rank falsehoods, and the fact that they gave him concern or occupied his attention would cause them to multiply. He ignores them, rightly believing that people nro in telligent enough to understand their marks of fraud. The public will consider the source in dealing with interviews. When they appear in a fake newspaper they may be dis credited at once. Admiral Dewey and the leading generals in the Phil ippines have been the chief target recently of these newspaper brigands. Puplic men will not be judged on irresponsible reports of what they have said. They are acquainted with authentic methods of making them aelves heard, and arc not likely to tako every stranger tlicj' meet into their confidence. Fake interviews are not hard to recognize. It is only necessary to say that they nro more numerous than usual. The Mormon missionaries who are hunting after converts in various parts of the country and incidentally running up against shotguns nnd tar nnd feathers look among the moro ignorant for additions to their fold. The increase in church membership is represented largely by converts from Europe, or from the backwoods districts of southern and western states. To reduce these gains there is a good deal of work going on right at titt Mat of Mormonism, Utah, Tk. report of the conference of the Methodist Episcopal church recently livid in Salt Lake City shows that of the membership cf twenty eight Christian churches of the vari- ous denominations in the state, 17 per cent arc converts from Mormon sources. Anil those who have left Mormonism comprise the most in telligent nntl progressive of the Mor mon population. Says the Now York Sun of 'Inst Saturday: "Tito way in which for the lest few days the public press lias teemed with evidences of indignant democratic policy of exalting Aguin aldo, abusing the president of the United States and favoring American surrender to its armed enemies in the Philippines, is cheering indeed." No decent member of any party could stand the traitorous depths to which this form of copperheadism had de scended. Prophets who insisted that the an nexation of Hawaii would cause the United States an enormous amount of trouble and expense have to be reminded now that the peaceful and Uouiishing little islands arc still on the map. "Our baby was sick for a month with severe cough nnd catarrhal fever, Al though 'h tried many remedies she kept getting worse, until we used One Min ute Cough Cure, it relieved at once and cured her in a few days." li.
