THE DALLES, OREGON.
The following from the Movo Ob
server is very apropos:
Discussing the present situation
of affairs in The Dalles if cur friemls
will permit the suggestion it is not
the question whether the Construc
tion Company "is in sympathy with
The Dalles," so much as "when will
The Dalles get into sympathy" with
itself? The visit of Henry Villanl
nnd family to The Dalles recently
caused many old residents to reflect
ou "what might have been" had Mr,
Tillr.nl been permitted lo do for
The Dalles what he wished to do,
sixteen years ago when he was the
moving spirit in both the 0. It. k N.
and the N. P. It. Cos. It was his
nmbition to locate all the shops for
the western division of both systems
in The Dalles, but he was not per
mitted to do so. Why? The city
was not in "sympathy" with itself.
JVs i result, after Mr. Yillard was
downed in the house of his friends,
the shops that were in The Dalles
were taken away and the place lost
an entei prise that would have made
The Dalles by this time the first city
in the state in point of population
nnd business. There can be no
doubt whatever about that. Mr. Vil
lard in his pilm' days was the most
enterprising and far-seeing railroad
builder of the age. In the construc
tion of the N. P. It. he foresaw
exactly what the present manage
ment have just begun to realize.
That the key lo the Pacific North
wflst trade is the gravity haul down
the Columbia river to tidewater.
Had those who superseded Sir.
Tillard in the management of the,
2H. P. It. realized that fact, and re-
tained control of the O. It. k X ,
they'd not have been compelled to
make the sacrifices they just have
wade, in the light for trackage which
ended on the 7th so gloriously for j
the old rival. Hut Tho Dalles gains!
nothing by the recent compromise,!
and if the city ever expects to re- j
cover from past follies, now is the
time to do so. Not by waiting to
ascertain whether Messrs. Turner,
Hlohr and others are in "sympathy"
with The Dalles, but by sensible
work, tending to show to the people
of the waiting empire that The
Dalles is worthy of the co-operation
of interior forces in the greatest of
11 plans to develop this marvelous
Teg ion for the good of nil.
LET'S "JIOQ" IT ALL.
The merchants throughout the In
land Empire are buying and telling
IiMtern bams, bacon and lard in
great quantities. In other wonU
there is not enough of tho home
product to supply tho demand. This
i condition that has Jong existed
in this section, but one that should
sot exist. The farmers of the mid-
die west should not be called on to
supply these necessaries to the farm
ers and others of Oregon ami Wash
ington. The fact of the matter is,
they should be produced nt home.
The conditions nro favorable to such
production, and during the depressed
times of a few years ago home de
mand was fully met by home pro
duction of these articles.
But everybody is devoting him
self to producing wheat, and too
many are producing the cereal on a
large scale, with the result that other
profitable lines of industry arc neg
lected, and the people are sending
large amounts of wealth to the East
that should be kept at home. There
are a number of people in "the hog
business," but not enough, and the
few that are in it find it profitable.
It is ridiculous in the extreme that
the consumers ot this entire section
should be made to contribute a vast
amount to railroads for transporta
tion of products from the East that
could be produced with benefit to all
concerned at home. In other words,
there should be more hogs and hog
ranches throughout the Inland Em
pire, more diversity of industry with
an Increase in our cupnetty of self-
support
-East Oregonian.
