JAMES E. EUSTIS.
James B. Eustis, who died Satur
day, was a man of more than aver
age ability and bis career was on the
whole a distinguished one. He was
southern born, hut attended the Har
vard law school at Cambridge and
After his graduation began practice
in Kew Orleans. His public life was
ever afterward as a servant of the
state of Louisiana until his appoint
ment to the embassy at Pans. He
served in the 'confederate army, for
the greater part of the time on the
staff of General Joseph Johnston.
After the war Mr. Eustis resumed
the practice of law and brcame a
prominent political figure in his state.
He was a member of the legislature
during reconstruction and was one of
the committee sent to Washington to
confer wilh President Johnson in re
gard to the vexed problems arising
out of reconstruction. He also served
in the state senate and in 1870 was
elected to the United States senate.
He was not seated till 1877 and
served only two years. In 1884,
however, he was elected for and
served a full term. For the greater
part cf his senatorial career he was a
prominent member of the committee
of foreign affairs.
While in the senate Mr. Eustis was
not in cordial sympathy with Mr.
Cleveland during the lutter's first
term. The senator from Louisiana
did not approve of the president's
civil service ideas, and while he was
In the senate he could hardly be )
called a supporter of the executive.
Later on they were drawn together
and one of Mr. Cleveland's first ap
pointments after hisseuond inaugura
tion was that of Mr. Eustis as out
representative to France. Ho was
l
'well fitted for the place. He had j
education, culture, a knowledge of ',
Txench language and literature and j
abundant private means. He made a
record abroad, although some of his j
addresses nnd intei views were criti-j
ciscd, and returned to this country j
leaving a highly honored name
among the French people. On the
-whole Mr. Eustis was one of the ablest,
most scholarly and best equipped
men for public .life that the South hxs
produced in late years. Spolccsman-Bcview.
the Spokesman-Review. He is now
one of the largest shipbuilders in the
world and able to turn out such craft
as the Oregon aud Olympia. How is
it that Scott could have done all this
if he is chained down b what some

A startllitR incident, of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was the
subject, tg nurrnted by him as follows:
"I was in n mo:t dreadful condition. My
skin was almost yellow, eyes sunken,
tongue coaled, pain continually in back
and sides, no appetite gradually prow
ir H weaker dr.y by day. Three physi
cians had Kiven tne up. Fortunately, a
triend advised '!ectric Bitters' ; and to
my great joy and surprise, the first
bottle made a decided improvement. 1
continued Iheir use for three weeks, and
am now a well man. I know they saved
my life, anil robbed the grave of another
victim." No one ehouldfail to try them.
