CARRYING CONCEALED WEAPONS
Regarding the shooting scrape at
Pendleton, the East Oregonian aptly
says:
The cowardly habit of "packing
gun" contrary to law is chargeable
with another crime in Pendleton
One man is in jail and another lies
in bed seriously wounded as a result
of it. The young man who had
"weapon concealed on his person, with
wuicn ue snot tue oilier, was a year
or more ago admitted to practice
Jaw, and although having knowledge
of the law he deliberately violated
it by going armed as if there were no
law, or no one to enforce it. If he
possessed the least respect for his
chosen profession, or for the law, or
.for order, or for any of the viitues
that support societj-, he would never
have armed himself like a brigand,
and he would be free from serious
trouble at this minute.
This young man had" no cause to
carry a dangerous weapon on his
person and is deserving of little
sympathy in his present trouble in
consequence, while his victim is
deserving of a good deal, for, al
though engaged m an avocation
"which necessarily brought him into
contact with reckless and desperate
characters, he never saw fit to stick a
pistol in his pocket or Bowie knife in
Lis boot leg for either purpose of
offense or defense. By this one act
ho demonstrated his superiority over
those whose physical and mental de
iiciencies were such as to cause them
to seek consolation in the protection
afforded by some dangerous weapon.
The lesson to be learned from this
tragedy i3 that the law should be
ligidly enforced against all persons
carrying concealed weapons contrary
lo the law. The officials could not
Tender a more valuable service to!
society than this.
SURE Wl) SCHEME OF SALMON.
The close fishing season did not
unit the fishermen on the lower Co
lumbia this summer, though it may
liavo been very ngrceable to tho
fish, Bays the Telegram. The state
ment that the salmon only fairly
commenced running just as the
season closed, and that soon after--ward
they were so thick that they
literally crowded one another out of
tho water, may be taken as- nn ex';
asperated fisherman's exaggeration,
yet there is enough truth in it to
wiggest that the calendar close sea
ton did not correspond with the
time of the fishes' migration.
For somo reason tho salmon
adopted a new time table this sum
mer, perhaps because they .had ob
tained from some drowned fisherman
m copy of the law ; perhaps because
tbey smelt a spell of winter in I
August. At all events, the law al
lowed the fish to get the best of the
fishrcmen this year, and efforts will
be mndc to put the closo season off
till n little later in the season, by a
change in the law.
The loss to the fishermen this year
may be a gain to them and to the
state, in an increased ruu of salmon
in future years. No close season at
all would suit some people best. But
all reasonable fishermen, as well as
others, agree that a close senson of
a month is necessary; though arbi
trary dates cannot exactly fit every
season best.
