A Wonderful State With a Great Future,
if the Producers Will Hut Heed
1 1 is Warning.
Wamiisotox, Aug. 20. "Oregon is
great country, n magnificent country,
ami tliu other states are equally throat.
Time section in iuitnuiiBuly wealthy in its
natural resources, fur more so than even
I. who hud rt'iid much of it, had ever
supposed. I found the people of Oregon
eiithiiHiHetlc over tlioir state, but there
w no tiinu in Oregon as enthusiastic iib
1 was after I hud feen n large part of
tint state. But tho people of Oregon
re quite capable of defending and boast
ing ou their country, and need no as
sistance from me.
'To mu Oregon was a marvel. Her
immense, boundless forests, her end I eft,
fertile valleys, and far-reaching fields
have never seen surpassed or equaled.
And the people of Oregon ure the right
people in the right place. Oregon is no
place for the sluggard, the lazy man, or
the sloven, and that class is not found
there, either. A more enterprising,
thrifty, Intelligent and diligent set of
people can be found nowhere. The
Oregon (armors are the cream of our
tillers of the soil, and as Biich, are able
to get the most from the bountiful re
sources at their disposal. They have
the best of everything at their disposal,
unti reap the best possible results.
Object of His Visit.
"My visit to Oregon was to study the
country, its resources, the methods of Its
fanners, and to see just how the depart
ment could render them tho most bene
ficial aseistnnco so that they might obtain
the best products from their farms and
forests. There is much that we might
do that would be of assistance to a few,
out It is the desire of the department to
seist all, and promote tho general wel
fare of the farmers throughout the state.
As I snid before, the resources of Oregon
re tho most abundant and of the finest
quality, hut there is a limit to even the
natural resources of Oregon, and It is to
Ruard agniuat a possible exhaustion that
"rang efforts should be turned. I found
U't in one respect the Oregon farmers
were adhering to an old and antiquated
cuUom, one which should bo abandoued
fwedily, for their own interests are at
"take. I refer to the summer fallowing.
It is a mistaken idea that fallowing is
"oeBcial, and where many of the Oregon
farmers are now securing but one crop
JJy might be reaping two, and Borne
limes three. In adhering to this ancient
Matom they are standing in their own
Wit. It is oue of my desires to impress

HARmsnuRG, Pa., Aug. 24. Ttie Re
publican state convention today nomi
nated Colonel James Barnel, of the
Tenth regiment, for state treasurer; J.
Hay Brown, of Lanchester, for supreme
judge, and Joeiali It. Adams, of Phila
delphia, for superior court judge. The
nomination for euprerae judge is equiva
lent to election by reason of two vacan
cies, and no elector being entitled to vote
for more than one person. The platform
indorses the administrations of McKinley
and Governor Stone, commends the ex
ecutive for bis appointment of Quay to
the United States senate and pledges the
party to reduction in expenditures of the
departments of etate government.
A demonstration was given Senator
Quay when he entered the hall accompa
nied by State Chairman Elkin. The
convention waB called to order by Chair
man Elkin and Senator Penrose was
elected temporary chairman.
After revieivingeventsof thepast three
years in an extended speech, and re
ferring to the coming convention he said :
"The supreme importance of sending to
that convention delegates who will give
an active and stalwart support to the re
nomination of Hon. William McKinley,"
and adding :
"He ranks with the great presidents of
the republic. He is respected, esteemed
and beloved by the people all over our
state. He has the unbounded confidence
of the people of the country, irrespective
of party, believing as they do in his in
tegrity, patriotism and statesmanship.
It has been most fortunate for our
country that he has been at the head of
the government in the trying times for
the past two years. Few will realize the
enormous burdens which have been Im
posed 011 him, taxing almost to the limit
his mental and physical energies. Iu
all the delicate questions of diplomacy
arising during tho war he has been the
guiding spirit.
"We look confidently forward to his
triumphant election and we feel sure
that with a renewed lease of Republican
supremacy and control in the nation,
our wonderful prosperity will continue
with rapid strides and our country will
advance fearlessly upon tho glorious des
tiny which seems to be marked out for
it."

From Sylvan Valley News, Brevrad,

It may be a question whether the
editor of a newspaper has the right to
publicly recommend any of the various
proprietary medicines which flood the
market, yet as a preventive of suffering
we feel it a duty to say a good word for
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar
rhoea Remedy. We have known and
used this medicine iu our family ior
twenty years and have always found it
reliable. Intmany cases a doie of this
remedy would bsvo hours of suffering
while a physician is awaited. We do
not believe In depending implicitly on
any medicine for a cure, but we do
belleyo that If a bottle of Chamberlain's
Diarrhoea Remedy was kept on hand
and administered at the inception oi an
attack, much suffering might be avoided
and in very many cases the presence of
a physician would not be rtoulred. At
least this hay been our experience
during the past twenty years. For sale
