Said the St. Louis Globe-Democrat
a few days ago : An enthusiastic
welcome has greeted the Pennsyl
vania regiment, just returned from
the Puiiinnincs, as it paraded
through the streets of San Francisco.
"The Pennsyl.vanians are a sturdy
Hooking lot," says a dispatch, and
4,their spick and span appearance
commanded great attention." Three
volunteer regiments from Manila
have reached San Francisco to be
mustered out. The Oregon regi
ment biought back over 1000 men.
The Nebraskaus report a total loss of
sixty-two men. The Pcnnsylvanians
lost an aggregate of only twenty
four men. Here arc tbiee regiments
which after a year's service, largely
on the firing line in Luzon and in
the trenches, return to their homes
with a combined mortality of 130.
All saw more or less hard fighting
anH marching. It was the Pcnn
sylvanians who stood the brunt of a
Spanish night sortie during a storm.
The !Nebraskans and Orcgonians were
in the thick of the engagements
reaching from Manila to Malolos and
San Fernando, and passed through
several ugly ambuscades. Hut they
are back home looking well and with
ranks but little reduced when com
parison is made with former wars.
In the face of figures so significant
it is useless to say that these regi
ments have not been intelligently
handled and well cared for. They
are healthy, make a fine appearance
on parade and their mortality list is
small. They have worked steadily,
fought bravely ar.d seen some hard
ships, but all this is in the line ofj
u)J&ers-iuyr Those who do not
count upon such an experience should
not enter the service. Many a regi
merit in the civil war returned with
Jess than 200 men. The regular
army in that struggle was literally
shot out of existence. When the
yellow interviewers circulate in these
returning regiments to collect ma
terial to effect the removal of Otis
and back up the claim that the war
is a failure, the men in the ranks
might well point to their long line lo
show how well Otis has guarded
their comfort and health, secured
them the vantage ground in fighting
nd preserved them from disaster.
These regiments arc not in the shape
that bespeaks nn incompetent general.
Por tho first time in tho memory
of iU inhabitants, Cicnfuegos lus
pasted through July without a case
of yellow fover. Now that tho fever
ia stamped out in Santiago, the
health of Cuba is remarkably good
for tho aeuson,
Tho visitors to a Colorado water.
Jug pUce, who were obliged to sub
It to wboleMle vaccination, arc
praying fervently "for the success of
our arms."
Those who arc insisting that Col.
Roosevelt will not last until 1904
ought to consult some of the Span
iards in Cuba on the subject of the
colonel's staying qualities.

It may be a question whether the
editor of a newspaper has the ri;;ht to
publicly recommend any of tho various
proprietary medicines which flood the
market, yet na n nreventiye of suffering
wo feel It a duty to say a good word for
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar
rhoea ltemedy. Wo have known and
used this medicine in our family tor
twenty years and haye always found it
reliable. In'many cases a dose of this
remedy would save hours of suffering
while a physician is awaited. We do
not believe in depending implicitly on
any medicine for u cure, I H we do
believe tnat if a bottlo of Chamberlain's
Diarrhoea Remedy was kept on hand
and administered at the inception of an
attack, much suffering might be avoided
and in very many cases the presence of
a physician would not be required. At
least this has been our experience
during the past twentv years. For eale
