'THE LAST STROKE,"
Aud It TVnc a Good .One by the sbair
Cumimy I.n.t Xlcht.
Again last night the Shaw Company
strengthened the opinion of Dalles peo
ple regarding their ability as a first-class
troupe by appearing in a play which re
quired much heart work and success
fnlly mastering it. While the play ite
Ealf was not so much to onr liking as
those of former nichte, at the same
time we npprpciate the work done and
the clever acting. All have heard of the
old lady from the backwoods who at
tended the theater, a. id so weil was the
play acted that becouini: eseited she
jumped to her feet aud addressed the
players during one of the most intense
scenes. DuMng the scene last night
where Mr. Shaw as "Richard Vance"
held the pistol to the h?ad of the de
tested "Dan Julio," which was so ad
mirably carried out by Albert Watson,
an eld man in the gallery started to hie
feet ml! said "Why don't you let it go!"
So perfectly was the vilhan taken that
thia seemed to be the verdict of the en
tire audience.
Such was the character of the entire
p srformancp, and everv part was well
taken, the tcenes between Mr. Shaw
and .Mm Carter being especially taking
and true in every detail.
The patriotism of the audience was of
ten appealed to, the music by the orches
tra being also along that line. As noth
ing touches an audience more than does
that class of mnsic, their selections were
doubly appreciated.
A very novel idea of advertising is
the manner in which Mr. Shaw has
chosen of advising the audience rezard
ing the Saturday matinee. Having
promised the first evening never to men
tion it Hgani, and forgetting himself
each evening, he ie called down by one
of the company, who thus advertises it
the more.
Their announcement was interrupted
last evening by the usher presenting
him with twu century blossoms which
had been eent by eouieone who wished
toehow their appreciation of his splen
did acting. II u responded in a neat
little speech. It was indeed a compli
ment, the bio-eomd being so rare and so
highly prized by their owners.
"Parmer Stebbine," the play in which
the company will be eeen tonight, was
written by Mr. Shaw and is a rural
comedy, pure and eimple. The piny is
eom'jwhat sensational, bat the comedy
element predominates. Mr. Shaw eo
completely buries hi own identity in
the character o( the old Vermont farm
er, who is "seoing the town'' for the
firs't time, that it is like a visit to the
country to sen him in (he part.
Their "jay psrado" thia afternoon
was a fair indue to what is to follow.
Do not misa this.
