same remarks are applicable as re

own country. Oregon has good
schools now at which all her boys
and girls can have as good training
and receive as good instruction as in
Eastern institutions. There is no
use for any boy or girl to go away

these are few."

TRUSTS EVERYWHERE.
Those who, like Mr. Havemeyer,
assert that the tariff is responsible
lor trusts seem to forget the ex
istence of like combinations in the
-countries where there is no tariff
protection. A staff correspondent of
the Philadelphia Press furnishes some
information in regard to trusts in
England and on the continent which
shows that monopolistic combinations
flourish there as well as in this
country.
The correspondent says that trusts
-exist in nearly every country in
Europe, and are quite common in
England. There are over 200 in Ger
many, as enumerated in the news
papers of that country, and a large
number in France. There are more
in England than the public is aware
of. These British trusts are organ
ized on practically the same basis as
Hie combinations in this country,
and their methods of business arc
similar. They have the same general
purpose that American trusts have,
and they seek its accomplishment by
. like means, even employing coercion
A quotation is given from
liirmingnam paper in which it is
stated that many of the victims of
the trusts would give half they
possessed to escape from an espionage
and domination they detest, but can
not shake off without the gravest
business risks.
The correspondent points out that
in addition to the syndicates and
trusts and combinations in England,
there are a large number of incorpo
rated companies with immense capi
tal which practically monopolize
many branches of business. There
-are many organizations on the conti
sent wnicn com Dine and sell con
jointly through a central bureau in
order to dictate prices and deprive
members of every vestige of inde
pendence. No member of such a
trust has a right to take or fulfill an
order, whether at wholesale or retail.
In that way the coal industry of
Germany is practically under the
control of a combination, and there
are many such combinations in
Prance. The chemical industry of
Prance, like that of Germany, is
almost exclusively controlled by a
combination.
Robbed the Grave.
A startling incident, of which Mr,
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was tbe
subject, is narrated by him aa follows
I was in a most dreadful condition. My
skin was almost yellow, eves eunken,
tongue coated, pain continually in back
and sides, no appetite gradually grow
ing weaker day by day. Three physi
cians bad given me up. Fortunately, a
Iriend advised 'Electric Bitters' ; and to
my great joy and surprise, the first
bottle made a decided improvement.

my life, and robbed the grave of another
