C 1,7 VOL,. XII THE DALLES, OREGON. TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 1899, NO 58 CANADA GIVES . AN ULTIMATUM Tells Email to Cloose Between Her ani MM Slates. BOUNDARY DIS PUTE IS WORSE Great Britain Cannot Proceed With the Negotiations in the Face of Such a Predicament, and Officials Cannot Place the Blame at Her Door Re port Positively Contradicted. New York, June 19. A special to the Journal and Advertiser from Washing ton eays: Canada has served notice on England that she must choose between .the Uqited States and the North Ameri can Dominion in the settlement of the Alaskan boundary question. It is stated on the higheet authority that this state ment represents accurately the condi tions submitted to England, which has delayed the negotiations between Am bassador Choate and Lord Salisbury in the provisional line of the modus vivendi. The position to Canada is known here officially. The official to whom it is known feels authorized in saying that there are only two ways out of the dif ficulty; first, that Canada will volun tarily recede from her demand lor a Pa cific tidewater port', or, second, that the United States shall surrender the prin ciple laid down by Secretary Hay, in his tentative boundary line, that Americans will not grant temporarily or otherwise any port facilities to the Canadians. That Canada will yield is considered by the state department officials, who have discussed the new and acute pbaees of the situation, as improbable. . It is asserted on authority that Eng land has been forced to yield to Canada and that the United States and England are wider apart today in the controversy than since the adjournment of the high joint commission. In the light of the present news, the conflict, which the provisional boundary line was intended to prevent, may be precipitated at any moment, and with greater show of probabitity when it be comes known that England has decided to etani irrevocably behind Canada. ; i England Denies It. London, June 1. The officials of the .colonial office today were shown the dis patch from Washington saying that Can ada had served notice on Great Britain that she const choose between United States and her North American domin ion in the settlement of the Alaska boundary dispute. They declared the story false, both in substance and fact, and that it can be further reaffirmed that a modus vivendi was reached early , last week, as cabled to the Associated Press at that time. The arrangement is a verbal one and denls with the question on broad lines. One or two minor details are st'll under diecuss.Ion, and when they are settled a final arrangement' will be entered into. It may be further said that the boundary agreed upon follows the summits of Wtite and Cbilkoot passes. Wedded After Fifty Years. Kossland, B. C, June 19. A romantic marriate toon place here recently. Fully half a century ago George, Kachle and Bertha Weidel went to school together, and subsequently became engaged. Cir cumstances separated them, however, and in the course of lime each of them married. For twenty-five years the two never met, and eventually one lost a much-loved husband while the other mourned the lose of a devoted wife. Each learned by soiue means of the lonely con dition of the other. They met again, and the early affection which had so long lain dormant in their brea&tp sprang into life with unabated vigor. The rest followed as a matter of course. The pair came Makes the food more delicious and wholesome WOVAt BAKINQ POWDER CO., NEW YORK. V here Saturday and were married that morning by Kev. G. H. Via San Francieco, June 19. A story of pos sible cannibalism ' and death on the Yukon trail has just reached here. Three men who left Dabl river on December 5, for Jimtown, were not beard of again and they were supposed to have been lost. Nothing was heard of them here till the steamer Rideout, which arrived today, brought a terrible tale of suffering and horror. - The men were Michael Daly, Victor Edair and M. Provost. They, were from Providence, R. I., Woonsocket, R. I., and Brockton, Mass., respectively. Tbey were discovered seventeen miles from the mouth of Old Man creek, they hav ing lost the trail and become bewildered. Having left Dabl river with only three weeks' food, but which was amply suffi cient for the 150 miles to Jimtown, the poor fellows were soon reduced to starva tion. . Daly's body was found, partly eaten, in a tent, and on the stove just as it was left when death overtook the others were found some scraps of moose hide and moccasins of which they were endeavor ing to make a stew. Daly's body was identified by the clothes. The other two men were found dead five miles away from the tent. The fact of the tent flaps being shut down when found would preclude trje possibil ity of Daly's body having been eaten by animals. The other men doubtless were driven by hunger to the awful extrem ity .of cannibalism. Four bundred dollars were found on the bodies.
