there, and the London papers have made
every effort to verify it, but eo far have
been unsuccessful. It is supposed here

Otis Confirms Report.
. Washington, June 15. General Otis
has cabled confirming the assassination
of General Luna, which he regards as
bound to have a good effect, as his large
following will now undoubtedly be for
eace.'
- New Yokk, June 16. In an interview
at Brussels with a Herald correspondent,
M. Andre, the Belgian consul-general at
Manila, declared that Luna's death was
a Godsend ; that be was the soul of the
rebellion and the most sanguinary man
of all Aguinaldo's army, and one who
tortured Spanish prisoners and lived by
insurrection. ,
M. Andre saya the assassination of
Luna removes the principal obstacle to
peace which the Americans have now a
great chance of speedily securing, even
by simple persuasion.
Imus Formally Surrendered.
New York, June 16. A dispatch to
'the Herald from Las Pinas by way of
Manila says : Spanish prisoners who
fled into the American lines from v Imus

to the mountains. They brought to Imus
the bodies of 100 killed" and 300 wounded
as the result of the recent fighting be
tween Las Pinas and Bacoor. -
The Spanish further say that the Fili
pino forces ere demoralized and without
ammunition, and that many rifles have
been thrown into the river. The alcades
of the town of In us deliveied the town
up to General Lawton, declaring that the
peace would now exist if it were not for
Aguinaldo's cut-throat band. Cape Viejo
is-eported to have been deserted by the
enemy. Thousands of non-combatants
are entering the Atncrican linee. The
official report shows that 121 bodies of in
surgents have been buried since the re
cant engagements. The American sol
diers are still finding bodies.

SAD TRAGEDY

POISON THE

Unfortunate Woman Ate Wheat That

Poison.
Sherwood, Or., June 16. A sad trag
edy occurred at the home of Albert Kus
bob, living about two miles south of
town, near noon yesterday, when Mrr.
Emma Kusbob committed suicide.
Mrs. Kusbob had returned home the
evening before from the Oregon insane
asylum at Salem on parole, after having
been confined there during the past
three months on account of a mild form
of dementia, and on being . left alone at
home during her husband's hurried
visit to a near neighbor's found ' while
wandering about the house, a can of poi
soned wheat used for destroying equijrels
and other small animals on the farm,
aad partook of the contents.
Rev. J. Eldrige and wife, near neigh
bors, called in soon after Mr. . Kusbob
had left and found Mrs. Kusbob eagerly
eating some kind of preserves presum
ably to destroy the intense bitter taste
remaining in the mouth, yet they did
not discover what had occurred during
their visit, no evidence of the tragedy
being visibleor suspected by tnem.
.Directly after jheir departure Mr. Kus
bob drove up to the gate near the house,
when he heard a cry and splash at the
well close to the kitchen door, and on
investigating found that his wife bad
jumped in feet foremost, alighting in
water some four feet deep.
She was rescued as quickly as possible,
and apparently no visible damage had
resulted from the leap except an abrqsion
of the ekin on one finger. After con
sciousness had been restored, resulting
from shock and particles of the poisoned
grain found, she finally admitted she had
tasted it, but would give no further par
ticulars, only she had taken both
methods of ridding herself of life.
' Dr. A. L. Savior was called in quickly
as possibly, and every effort was made
to counteract the deadly poipon, bat
without success", convulsion succeeding
convulsion at intervals until about 10
o'clock, when death ended the woman's
sufferings. Mrs. Kusbob was a very
estimable Christian lady, aged 44 years,
and bad resided near here a long time.
No family except her husband remain to
mourn her unfortunate death.
