cabled today the following:
''Manila, Jane 15. Adjutant-General
Washington : The success of Lawton's
troops in Cavite province was greater
than reported yesterday. The enemy
numbered over 4000. The killed,
wounded and captured are more .than
one-third, and the remainder are much
scattered, having retreated south to
loans, their arsenal. Of five pieces of
artillery, three werecaptured. The navy
aided greatly on the ehore of the bay,
I landing forces occasionally. The in
habitants iu that country rejoice at the
deliverance and welcome with enthusi
astic demonstrations the arrival of our
troops."
The war department bulletins the fol
lowing :
"Manila, Jane 15. Adjutant-General,
Washington: A prominent Filipino,
friendly to the Americans, has been
assassinated at Cebu. The inhabitants
of that locality are urgently requesting
American protection in stronger force.
Have sent a battalion of Tennesseeans
and two guns from Ilo Ilo which insures
peace. Hugbes is now in charge of
affairs in that section. OTIS."
Imus Taken.
Manila, Jane 15, 5:50 p. m. Captain
Cable, of General Wheaton's staff, with
three companies of the Twenty-first regi
ment, reconnoitered in the direction of
Imue. The rebels, who were apparently
expecting an attack,' retired, leaving be
hind them twenty Spanish prisoners,
who joined the Americans. The rebels
have probably gone to the mountains
along the lake. According to the native
stories, they carried 100 dead and 300
wounded through Bacoor after the re
cent battle.
The natives are now flocking into Ba
coor, and it is probable there are many
soldiers in plain clothes anions them.
The whole sectijn is practically with
out food, and General Otis bas ordered
the distribution of rice and beef to the
inhabitants. -
Otis Organizing Regiments..
Washington, Jane 15. Pursuing a
policy determined upon some months
ago, General Otis is organizing three
regiments in the Philippiues composed
of officers and men of the state volunteers
who desire to remain in the service. The
army bill authorized this kind of enlist
ment in the Philippines. General Otis
1 and the volanteer officers in the Philip
pines have been consulting to see bow
many men will enlist.
The number bas not been very large,
as there seems to be a desire on the part
of the volunteers to retnrn to the United
States-with their organizations.

Dies From The Effects of a Violent
Fall.
Society of California will today send to
President ' McKinley an invitation en
graved on. a plate of gold, asking him to
become the guest of. that organization
in this city. The society is already rais
ing a fund for his entertainment, it be
ing generally believed that the chief ex
ecutive will visit the Pacific coast later
in the year.

special, from Lebanon, Mo., says that
Hon. Richard Parks Bland died at his
home near Lebanon at 4 :30 o'clock a. in.,
peacefully and without apparent suffer

Mr. Bland returned Lome when con
gress adjourned in -March, and soon suf
fered a relapse from at tact of la grippe.
For more than two months he bas been
confined to his home, and his health has
gradually declined. His family is pros
trate with grief and all the community
is bereaved. The funeral will take
place Saturday i services being conducted
by the Masonic order.

Kodak Discovers a Drowning Boy.
Spokane, June 15. Donglas Martin,
the 11-year-old eon ot Louis I. Martin,
fell into the rivr yeeterdry afternoon at
the big whirlpool and his body is still
missing. The lad' was sitting on a coffer
dam his feet hanging over the whirlpool
He was missed and workmen thought
he bad gone home, but a kodak enthusi
ast who was taking a snap-shot at that
portion of tbe river, including tbe coffer
dam, while focusing his instrument saw
the boy's body pass across the picture
on the sighting lens. His was the only
eye to witnees the tragedy. ,

Portland, Or., June 14. Sanhel L.
Simpson, the poet and journalist, died
tonight from tbe effects of a fal yester
day. He . was walking onthe street
when he slipped and fell, Atriking his
head on the hard pavement. He never
regained consciousness.
Simpson was 54 years old, having come
to Oregon in 1845, wher a few months
old,-with his parents. He is a graduate
of Willamette University, and was ad
mitted to the bar. He practiced law for
sevtral years. During the past fifteen
years he has been employed on various
newspapers of the state.
For some time be was employed ty
Bancroft & Co., in the compilation of a
series of Pacific coast ecbool books. He
has also contributed extensively to
magazines and newspapers during the
past twenty-five years.
