Omaha, June 14. The town of Her
mans, Neb., is totally destroyed. Train
No. 2, on the Omaha road, palled into
Herman just after the storm, and its
crew began the work of rescue; nearly
100 persons were brought back to Blair.
This morning relief and assistance were
sent to the homeless people, many of
whom had been out in the rain all night.
A larger number whose names are not
reported are severely injured, while half
of those reported have received possibly
fatal injuries.
Story of an Eye Witness.
Blaib, Neb., June 14. One of the
beat descriptions of the storm was re
ceived from J. A. Kelley, a Council
Bluffs traveling man.
"When it reached a point to the north
west we were terrified to see it suddenly
change its course and make directlv for
the town. We all hurried into the cellar
and saw no more of the tornado, but we
knew by the frightful din that it was
working bavoc in the town. When it
bad passed, we emerged from the cellar
and found that the bouse bad been
wrecked and that every building in town
bad been blown down with the exception
of an isolated' few on the outskirts. The
tornado swept right down the main
street, crushing the buildings as though
they were eggshells. The only brick
building of importance in the town was
the bank.
"After the storm I do not recall seeing
it and I presume it, too, was destroyed.
The town was a pile of debris soaking
with water. In front of us we could see
horses, pigs, and frame buildings all
heaped together. I conld not eay bow
manv persons were killed or bow many
were injured. I saw several dead and
many wounded. Of course there were
many still alive after the storm and they
did all they could to assist in the work
of rescue. When the first train left I
came back.
Report From Herman.
Herman, Neb., June 14. Ten were
killed and about twenty injured in last
night's tornado. It is thought all are
now accounted for, unless the storm has
been more disastrous in the country than
anticipated. Not a single building in
the town is left whole.
The Dead at New Richmond.
New Richmond, Wis., June 14. No
bodies were recovered from the tornado
ruins last night, The work is being
abandoned on account of a heavy rain
and exbauetion of the working parties.
It is expected the task of looking for the
dead will proceed with greater Euccess
than yesterday. The number still in the
ruins is variously estimated from 50 to
100.
AH morning long funerals were passing
through the town. There were no hearses
and the dead were carried to the graves
in grocery wagons. No more bodies have
been recovered np to noon.

BODY OF A
WOMAN FOUND
Dead Body of An Unknown Found in
the River Near Sprague Landing.
Stevenson, Wash., June 13. Nicho
las Gregorius discovered the body of an
unknown woman floating in the Colum
bia river, near Sprague landing Sunday.
The body bears evidence of foul play.
The face had been beaten fearfully, and
the arms were bruised. There was little
clothing on the body. In one stocking
was a half-pint flask of whiskey. On
the middle finger of the right hand was
a gold ring witn Diue setting. xne
woman bad dark hair, about eight in
ches long. She was about 26 years old.
The body had been in the water several
days. J. M. Center, justice of the peace,
held an inquest, but nothing was
brought out as to the identity of the
drowned person.

Hard Lines for Colorado.
Denver, Colo., June 14. Three thou
sand employes of the trust smelters in
Denver, Pueblo and Leadvllle, walked
out at noon today, having extinguished
the fires in the big furnaces and put
everything in perfect order for the sea
son of idleness. All shipments of ore and
fual to the smelters have been ordered
stopped. As a result many coal mines
are preparing to reduce their production,
and some will close. Almost every in
dustry in the state will be affected.

He has a dark mustache and was dressed
in overalls; wore either a dark or light
shirt; lace eportsman shoes, tan color.
Bert Whitney was 21 years old ; weight
about 175 pounds ; height 5 feet, 11 in. ;
smooth shaved ; dark hi own hair. He
wore dark pants with light strips and
heavy laced shoes, and has a tuft of light
colored hair on the left, back side of
head ; two burn scars on body.

Washington, June' 14. Henry O.
Havemeyer, president of the American
Sugar Refining Company, was examined
by the industrial commission today in
connection with the investigation of
trusts. His testimony related almost
wholly to the sugar industry, and he
opened with a vigorous attack upon the
customs tariff, which he declared was
the "mother of all trusts," becoming
such, by providing "an inordinate pro
tection to manufactured articles."
The attack was made in -a written
statement, whicb he read. Havemeyer
asserted that a tariff of 10 per cent was
as high as any tariff should be. He con
tended that sugar is discriminated
against in the tariff in the interest of
Louisiana canegrowers, beet-sugar-makers
and the eugar-makers of the
Hawaiian islands. To these interests,
he contended, the United States contri
buted $24,000,000, which was taken out
of the pockets of the people.
Replying to questions by Professor
Jenks, after be had concluded reading
bis paper, Havemeyer said the American
company was capitalized for much less
than it was worth. "But for the clamor
against trusts," he said, "it could be
sold for three times its capitalization."
Yet the refineries could, be duplicated
$35,000,000 to $40,000,000. "The present
capacity of the trnst is," he said, "45,
000 barrels a day and the output 30,000."
