What's the matter with The Dalles
when from one warehouse in the city is
shipped to the interior 200,000 pounds of
freight in two days? She's all right.
"Dearest," 6he murmured, "I'm so
afraid you'll change." "Darling," he
answeied, "you'll never find any change
about me." Which was painfully true
in a double sense.
There will be a special meeting of the
board of fire delegates this evening at
8 o'clock at the city hall. It is hoped
that every member of the board will
make an effort to be present.

A dispatch from Manila yesterday
says that the Oregon boys are returning
there from the front. A statement has
bjen prepared which Bhows the number
of deaths which have occurred in the
army since the beginning of war with
Spain as follows: In Cuba, 1399; in
Porto Rico, 287, in Honolulu, 45; in the
Philippines, 606; in the United States,
3S72. Total, 6209.
Reports again are rife that tbe Oregon

tbe long desired through car service for

change cars at night.
Manv ladies of the Commercial Club
have felt a little anxious for fear they
might be debarred from attending the
bowling conteet tomorrow evening be
tween the Astoria and Dalles teams. This
anxiety was quite unnecessary as the
Commercial Club has never been known
to slight the ladies. Indeed, no club in
the state pays such deference to the
ladies as does onr own. They may rest
assured that they will be welcome
tomorrow night.
River readings this morning were as
follows: Lewis ton, 12.6; a rise of one
foot and four-tenths. Wenatchee, 19 6;
rise of 1.2. Northport, 7.4 ; rise of 1.1.
Umatilla, 13.6; rise of .8. Columbia,
21 feet; a rise of one. foot. Pague still
reiterates that on Sunday the river he:e
will stand at 27; at Umatilla, 16; at
Portland, 15 feet. In the year 1894 on
May 24th, tbe river at this place stood
18.8 higher than it stood yesterday.
From Dr. Hollister who visited Dr.
Frazier while in Oakland, we learn that
the latter is more than pleased with his
new home, and is building up a large
practice : there. . He has secured
the patronage of tbe Berkeley college
students. Mr. C. W. Phelps who re
cently moved there from this place is
not qnite so enthusiastic over Oakland,
he having been ill most of the time since
be arrived there, and is planning to re
turn to Oregon. -
Heppner had a regular terror of a hail
storm Tuesday, the worst, perhaps, that
has ever visited that place, and the rain
etorm which followed fairly flooded the
streets. Tbe noise of the "hail upon
the roof" fairly stopped a speech which
Hon. Ellis was addressing to the court.
A storm that can drown the voice of a
United States congressman must have
been a thundering one. What's the
matter with trying that kind of a storm
on some of the "silver-tongued" orators
like Bryan for instance?
The Dalles had somewhat the ap
pearance of s reservation yesterday,
Indians by the wholesale lining the
streets and holding up tbe corners. Last
night two big "tyhees" thought they'd
have a little circus of their own, and of
course the swallowing of fire water was
one of the pricclpal feats, and av a
catnral consequence a few hours later
the "tkookura bouse" had swallowed
them. This morning they were brought
before the reorder and the city treasury
swallowed $3 of their hard earned
"chickamun."
At about 1:30 this afternoon a special
passed through the city bearing the
Fourth cavalry, composed of seventj-
eight men nuder Major Morton, who
have been stationed at Walla Walla for
tbe past seven months and are now on
their way to tbe Presidio at San Fran
cisco, ami from there to Manila. Among
them was Homer Barnett.'a halt broiler
of N. M. Eastwood, whom he had not
seen for several years and was delighted
to meet at the depot. The young man
was mnch pleased at the prospect of
reaching Manila ere long, and said he
had been anxious to be there . ever tince
fighting began.
This morning the grand jury brought
in a finding of not a true bill in the
case oi the State vs. F. N. Spicer,
charged with killing W. D. Jones about
two months ago in Antelope. Most of
the witnesses who were eubpccr.te 1 from
that place returned today. The mnch
heralded case against Receiver Otis
Patterson was not even taken up, in
the sense of an investigation, it being
considered too trivial, and was therefore
dismissed. Thexcircuit court this term
was short lived, coming to an end this
afternoon, when the juries were dis
charged at about 3 o'clock. This was
an exceptional term, not a single in
dictment being brought in by the grand
jury, nor a civil case tried. Jailer Fitz
Gerald is now contemplating advertis
ing for boarders, as bis hostelry is now
vacated. '

THE FLYER FLEW.
Sports Along at a 23-Mile Clip Sht'i
All Rtcnt.
The D. P. & A. N. Co. made no mis
take in naming the new boat the Inland
Flyer, for a flyer she proved to be 011 her
official trial trip yesterday. j
Leaving the Oak-street . wharf at 10
o'clock yesterday morning, she e teamed
down the Willamette at an average rate
of speed of 18 miles an hour, which was
maintained until ICnapp'e beacon, on
the Columbia was in line with the pilot
house. From there she spurted to Fale's
beacon, covering the dis'.an e in a
fraction more than five miuutes. The
government course, a knot, or 1 17 mile,
over which the torpedo boats Davis and
Fox were sped, was covered in 3 minutes
and 23 seconds giving a good illustra
tion of the Flyer's ability. Near St.
Helena the boat was headed up stream,
and then steamed up the Columbia to
meet the steamer Regulator of the same
line, in whose company she returned to
her dock about 4 o'clock in the after
nom.
Although this was the first trial since
the engines have been overhauled ar.d
a condenser put in, the machinery
worked very smoothly, and trre result of
the trial was eminently satisfactory.
During the spurt betw een Knapp'a and
Fale's the engines, though "hooked up,"
attaint d a speed of 330 revolutions to
tbe minute under 240 pounds of stesm.
Unluckily, a-"gAsket" blew out at this
stage, causing the guage to fall to an
average of 180 pounds. Yet, the dis
tance was covered at a r:tc of speed of a
little over 23 miles per hour.
. It is the intention of the company to
try coal on the next trip, which will be
made Tuesday. Telegram.
Smothered From Too Much Fat. .
Yesterday we published an article re
garding the case of an Indian woman Bt
Walla Walla, named Mrs. Lyman, who
was too fat to live, but bad been brought
to that place in the hope that physicians
could do something for' her. It seems,
however, that their efforts failed. The
Union says: .
Monday it was decided by her physi
cian, Dr. N. G. Blalock, that something
had to be done at once in an effort to
save her life. Accordingly, Mrs. Lyman
and her husband were consulted and
agreed to an operation. Tuesday morn
ing at 9 o'clock, with remarkable forti
tude the Indian woman bade her hus
band goodby and' submitted to the
Eurgeon's knife. The operation did not
take long but only ten pounds of fatty
matter could be removed as the woman
was so fleshy equally in all parts that
yery little of the fatty tissue could be
removed with safety. She recovered
nicely from the operation and it was
hoped some relief would come, but,
however, that was not to be. About
5 o'clock Mrs. lyman found much diffi
culty in breathing and was literally
choked to death from fatty tissue press
ing on and smothering the heart.
Tbe case is a very remarkable one of
obesity and notwithstanding the fact
that the woman ate little food, ehe grew
from day to day at a wonderful rate,
flesh seeming to grow upon flesh. No
remedies to reduce her weight had any
effect. " "" '
Hats OA.
A ruling of the Broad Street Method
ist church of Columbu?, O., requires
women to take off their bats during
service. This is commendable in many
ways, and will go far toward cultivating
tbe Christian spirit with its attendant
graces.
As "the purpose of wcrebip is edifica
tion," worshippers should take steps to
remove whatever interferes with this,
even if the barrier be a twenty five
dollar creation of millinery art. In the
human breast there arises a feeling de
plorably akin to the angry passions
when the eyes are trying to look over a
high fence of flowers or feathers that
effectually shuts out the view of speaker
or singer.
Hygienic reasons may also be urged
in favor of a general custom of removing
the article in question. And last, but
by no means least, of thegbeneSts to be
derived is the probable decreasing desire
for "show" hats and the consequent
shrinkage ..in millinery bills. By all
means let ns respond cheerfully to the
mandate, "Hats off." Union Signal.
