An Excellent Combination. The pleasant method and beneficial effects of the well known remedy, SrBUP of Fins, manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co., illustrate the value of obtaining- the liquid laxa tive principles of plants known to be medicinally laxative and presenting them in the form most refreshing to the taste and acceptable to the system. It is the one perfect strengthening laxa tive, cleansing the system effectually, dispelling colds, headaches and fevers gently yet promptly and enabling- one to overcome habitual constipation per manently. Its perfect freedom from every objectionable quality and sub stance, and its acting on the kidneys, liver and bowels, without weakening or irritating them, make it the ideal laxative. In the process of manufacturing1 figs are used, as they are pleasant to the taste, but the medicinal qualities of the remedy are obtained from senna and other 'aromatic plants, by a method known to the California Fig Syrup Co. only. In order to get its beneficial effects and to avoid imitations, please remember the full name of the Company printed on the front of every package. CALIFORNIA FIG SYRUP CO. Hinges, of Portland, secretary -of the Oregon Historical Association, was the speaker of the evening and read an interesting paper upon "The Early Literature of Oregon." Mr. W. H. Wil son introduced the speaker with a few comments upon the desirability of the -inhabitants of this state becoming ac -quaicted with its early history, and .stated in this connection that knowledge should begin at home. Mr. Himes' paper began with the first mention of Oregon in literature, which occurred in the writings of Jonathan Carver about the middle of the 17th century. From . that time until recent years' the increas ing mention of the great Northwest in the writings of the world was traced with much detail and told in an exceed ingly interesting manner. The first printing press ever in the Pacific North west was brought from the Sandwich islands early in the thirties and used to print the first copies of the early Oregon papers. This press, Mr. Himes stated, was now in his office in Portland. The lecture was well attended, and thoee who were present felt under much obli gation to Mr. Himes for his interesting researches and to the Taine class for providing such an interesting occasion.
