SOLDIER SOLVES THE PROBLEM.
Letters written by the volunteer
soldiers, fighting in the Philippines,
to their friends at home do not give
any support to the Atkinson and
.copperheads who are opposing the
government's occupancy of its terri
tory, says the Walla Walla Union.
The bojs who have thus far sustained
their government oppose its relin
quishment. One Oregon volunteer
writes thus: "This is a fine countrj'.
We want to keep the Fhilippines.
The volunteers here have been in
vited home, but the boys do not
-want to go. All the boys are will
ing to remain until the war is over.
I think if the United States will give
us each 160 acres of land and guar
antee us the title, one-half of Com
pany I will be settlers in these
islands. We will defend the islands
against invasion, beoa-.se they are
the most valuable part of any country
that the United States ever obtained
possession of."
Other letters of the same import
have come from the volunteers at
Manila. In the letter of the Oregon
boy, he gives a solution of the prob
lem which is a vexation to the anti
imperialists. His suggestions open
the way to enlghtened civilization,
through American influence, Ameri
can trade and the expansion of
American commerce. Peopled with
Americans and American energy and
enterprise will be infused in the
present population and the islands
will become famous in the commer
cial world.
The German-American who has
just got himself into prison in Ger
many for applying an offensive
epithet in that country to the kaiser
will hardly arouse much sympathy
in the United States. This person
ought to have known, and doubtless
did know, that no such liberty to
abuse the head of the slate is allowed
in Germany as there is in this
country. A resident or visitor in a
country must obey that country's
laws and regulations or take the
consequences. The German-American,
ItalianAmerican, Russian
American or American-American
who supposes Tie can abuse kaisers,
kings and czars in Iheir own country
with the same impunity with which
he can denounce or lampoon presi
dents in the United States must be
a very innocent or a very ignorant
individual.
Mr. Howells, the author, is op
posed to war or the shedding of
blood in any form. In fact, he is
the most conspicuous non combatant
in the literary world. He has never
permitted anybody, to be killed in
Lis stories, except in one instance,
where a young, man drifted accident
ally into a riot and was found dead
before the author could extricate
iiim.
From the excoriations given W.
J. Bryan by the leading speakers at
the National Reform Association and
the reorganized committee of the
peoples party, it is 'evident that his
popularity in 1896 has turned to hate
in 1899.
Sandy Hook's big gun, to be
mounted next September, is fifty
feet long and fires a 2400-pound shot
with the ramming force of a big bat
tleship going fourteen miles an hour,
It is the most powerful gun yet con
structed.
A $10,000 banquet will do Dewey
ho good. His stomach is already
out of order and will have to go into
dry dock for the next six months.
The Best in the World.
We believe Chamberlain' Cough
Remedy is the best in the world. A few
weeks ago we suffered with a eevere cold
and a troublesome cough, and having
read their advertisements in our own
and other papers we purchaeed a
bottle to see if it would effect us. It
cured us before the bottle was more than
half used. It is the best medicine out
for colds and coughs. Tue Herald,
Andersonville, Ind. For sale by Blake-
ley & Houghton Druggists.
An Epidemic of Whooping Cough,
Last winter during an epidemic of
whooping cough my children contracted
the disease, having eevere coughing
spells. We had used Chamlerlain's
Cough Remedy very successfully for
croup and naturally turned to it at that
time and found it relieved the cough
and effected a complete cure. John E.
Clifford, Proprietor Norwood House,
Norwood, N. Y. Thin remedy is for sale
by Blakeley & Houghton, druggists.
