EVERYONE SHOULD GIVE HELP
It i3 gratifying to note the splen
did response which the people of our
state are making to the movement to
place a token of esteem to the mem
ory of those of Oregon's sons who
gallantly laid down their lives for
our flag. All reports go to show
that the state is thoroughly aroused
to the importance of the work, and
that our people in other portions of
Oregon are coming to Portland in
great numbers to take part in the
entertainments to be given by the
Woodmen of the World, May 30th
to June 3d. The general committee
of that organization has received the
most cordial support from the people
ot Portland, and every request has
been gladly acceded to. The press
has opened its columns, the business
houses arc decorating their windows
and business men have been liberal
patrons as advertisers in their souve
nir program. Without exception,
every firm furnishing printing mat
ter or material of any description
has done so at actual cost and with
out hope of gain or profit.
This is as it should be. That this
movement is destined to be a great
success is a foregone conclusion, and
that funds enough will be raised to
p?ace a beautiful shaft to the memory
of "our boys" is certain. Now let
every person who can by their time,
money or talent aid this patriotic
movement do so. Let each one feel
that he or she has had a part in as
sisting tins noble and laudable under
taking. Telegram. .
OUTPUT OF THE KLONDIKE.
Official estimates of the gold out
put of the Klondike for 1899 go as
high as $19,000,000. It is" a large
yield, but does not compare with the
gold output of California from 1849
to 1861, as will become more ap
parent by reference to the following
table:
1849 $40,000,000 1856. . f 55,000,000
1850 50,000,000- 1857 55,000.000
1851 55,000,000 1858 50,000,000
1852 60,000,000 1859.... 50,000,000
1853 65,000,000 1860 45,000,000
1854.... 60,00.0000 1861 ... 40.030,000
1855 55,000,000
It was not until 1872 that the an
nual gold yield of California fell to
$19,000,000. If Alaska is to be a
permanent factor in the gold yield
of the world, psy ore must be found
in its quartz veins, and that has not
yet been discovered on the Yukon.
Placer diggings are soon exhausted.
A few seasons of feverish activity,
and the gulches once noisy with
industry, will be deserted. Towns
which sprang up iu a year, will
languish and be forgotten. If pay
quartz is not found around. Dawson
City, the time is not distant when
that busy camp will become a mem
ory with Oro Fino, Elk City, Wild
Horse and a score ; of other placer
camps of almost forgotten glory.
The Kansas City Journal says that
the attorney for General Miles se
verely criticised the findings of the
court of inquiry. " Well," wasn't he
employed to criticise the proceed
ings, and if he now criticizes the
findings he is only earning his pay.
General Lawion with his Indian
fighting tactics keeps the Filipinos
on the run, and it looks now as if
they were approaching the last ditch,
in a demoralized condition, where
they must fight, surrender or scatter
into small guerilla parties.
Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been
made, and that too, by a lady in this
country. "Disease fastened its clutches
upon her and for seven years Bhe with
stood its se ye rest teets, bat her vital
organs were nndertermined and death
seemed imminent. For three month9
she coughed incessantly, and could not
sleep. She finally discovered a way to
recovery, by purchasing of us a bottle of
Dr. King's New Discovery for Consnmn
tion, and was so much relieved on taking
first dose, that she slept all night; and
with two bottles, has been absolutely
cured. Her name is Mre. Lather Latz."
Thus writes W. C. Hamnick & Co., of
Shelby, N. C. 'J rial battles free at
Blakeley & Houghton's Drag Store. -
Regular eiza 50c and $1.00. Every

An JEpldemlc of Whooping; Cough,
Last winter during an epidemic of
whooping cough my children contracted
the disease, having severe coughing
spells. We had used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy very successfully tor
cronp and naturally turned to it at that
time and found it relieved the cough
and effected a complete cure. John E.
Clifford, Proprietor Norwood House,
Norwood, N. Y. This remedy is for sale
by Blakeley & Honzhton, druggists.
