At the request ot many, a repetition of "A Summei'd.Fancy" was given laet night, bat, contrary to expectation, a email house greeted the performance -While many considered the rendition as - good as that ol the previous night, The "Chronicle s iemsd t? notice a leek of the vim which waa eo prominent the night before, due to a smaller audience aad fatigu) on the part of the performers. The specialities by J. F. Hampshire and WP. H. Levin were," however, a great "addition to the play, and very ' pleasing to the audience. It was with much reluctance that the members of the cast gave the repetition Bat oaring to the disappointment felt at the first night's performance when they were compelled to play to a much .smaller audience than our home talent bas ever been greeted by before, and considering that perhaps it was due to Che fact that they could not be pereuad ed that local talent could give a good performance with a week's rehearsal, it was decided to repeat it and endeavor to at least cover the expenses ot both nights last night. The prices were- therefore reduced and other specialties intro duced, but, in enite of the fact that the jBret performance was eo highly spoken of, there was hardly a halt house last night. While we sympathize with the idea . that people are often called upon to in flict upon themselves the torture of listening to home talent for the sake of helping along the cause for which the entertainment is given, at the same ti-ne the local talent flatter themselves that patronage is often given to travel ing shows which are infinitely inferior and the proceeds of which Is not to be used for any charitable purpose or to benefit any local institution. Some time since hearing that th editors were coining through The Dalles on their way to Portland, and not wish ing to be the only city to refuse them entertainment and receive thereby tne advertisement which their presence will insure every place they visit, the Cum tnercial (Jlub invited them to stop over in this city and go down on the boat This entertainment will cost something, and as there have been numerous calls on our citizens of late, it was deemed best to improve the opportunity to. give them something in return for their money, and when Mr. jevin visited our city proposing to give a play with oar home talent, assuming entire charge and receiving but 35 per cent of the net proceeds, it was thought that no better plan could ba adopted to raise a portion of the amount necessary, presuming of course that the same patronage would be giveu as on similar occasions. Bat such was not the case, and instead of playing on the first night's performance to a $175 house, the proceeds were only $125. However, Dalles people who always appreciate the fact that our home people give their services gratis and evince that appreciation by their presence, at the same time overlooking any deficiency and missing no opportunity to give encouragement, should not be . over looked and the company appre ciate their loyalty, as do they also that of Mr. F. H. . Levin, who has proven himself a perfect gentleman in every respect , in his dealing with the cast and the club, ever anxious to do right by all concerned. Those who have worked with him and the committee who have dealt with him will remember him kindly. Notice.
