REPLACED BY

Captain Grant, of the Utah Battery,
Called the Dewey of the Army-The
Nebraska Regiment Makes a
Strong Appeal for a Temporary
Respite From Duty at the Front.
Manila, May 12.-4:50 p. m. Freeh
troops are beginning to go to the front.
Two battalions of the Seventeenth infan
try (.regulars), that bad beeu holding the
lines abont the city of Manila, will join
General MacArthur's division at San
Fernando tomorrow, and one battalion
of the same regiment will reinforce
General Law ton's division near Bacolor.
These troops will be replaced by the
Twenty-first infantry regiment, which
arrived from the United States on the
transport Hancock yesterday.
Captain Grant, of the Utah battery,
whose success in managing the army
gnnboati Laguna de Bay and Cavadonga
baa won him the soubriquet of "the
Dewey of the army," has been put in
command of the recently purchased
Spanish gunboats, whose arms the in
surgents captured. These vessels are
now being prepared for operations on the

Nebraska Regiment's Memorial.
Manila, May 12 via Hong Kong).
The First regiment of Nebraska volun
teer infantry is taking the usual step of
respectfully petitioning the division com
mander, General McArthar, to tempor
arily relieve them from duty at the front.
. The regiment is badly exhausted by the
campaign, in which it has taken an active
part, and not many more than 300 men
of the organization are at present fit for
duty. On Sunday last 160 men of this
regiment responded to the sick call. The
men, in view of the facts, have pre
pared a respectful . memorial to Mac-
Arthur, asking that their regiment be
withdrawn for a short time from the
fighting line in order that they may re
cuperate. The memorial states that the
men are willing to fight, but are in so
condition to do so, owing to the strain
of long marching, continual fighting and
outpost doty, in which they have been
engaged. The memorial adds that since
February 2, the regiment has lost 225
men in killed and wounded.

This is the firet formal indication that
the famous flagship is coming home im

cabled Admiral Dewey permission to re

at once. The notice posted at the navy
department amounts to the information
that the Olympia will not remain long
enough to receive the outward mail.
The Mr. Stevens referred to is the navy
department's agent at London to dis
tribute all of the mail for United States
warships of European waters, so he will
see to it that the Olympia receivea her's
as soon as she passes the Sut-z canal.
It is estimated at the navv department
that Dewey will reach the United States
in time for a national demostration on
tne Fourth of July next. The Olym
pia will not come under full steam, but
nevertheless she should make the run to
New York in about fifty-five days. That
she is to come to New York is almost
certain.
Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been
made, and that too, by a lady in this
country. "Disease fastened its clutches

See thai Buckle?
It's something decidedly new and original, and your belt is
not quite the latest unless it has this style.
It is so convenient too, so easily adjusted, tbatyou will
greatly prefer it to the old style harness buckle, and then it looks
so much neater.
Strange to say, however, the price is no higher for a belt with
this buckle than it is for one with the other.
