FILIPINOS MAKE
AUDACIOUS ATTACK
They Run a Train Almost lo American
OutDOsts and Tear up Tract
DAMAGE CREATED
NOT HEAVY
The Remnant of the Nebraska Regiment,
Only 350 Men, Ask to Be Retired
Captain Grant's Gunboats Make a
Trip Up the San Fernando River.
Manila, May 8, 7 :40 p. m. The Fili
pinos surprised the United States forces
-at San Fernando with a daring trick on
yesterday. A railway train with an
engine at each end was ran almost to
the American outposts, and in plain
eight of the town. Before they could be
reached, a gang of natives sprang off the
train and tore up several lenghts oi rail
way track, boarded the train again and
steamed away so quickly that there was
no opportunity to capture the raiders.
The Nebraska regiment is asking for
temporary relief from duty. Only 375
men of this regiment are left at the front.
The army ganboat Laguna de Bay
and Cap. Cavdonga, nnder command of
Captain Grant, which started up the
San Fernando river for Gaaua yester
day, as was presumed to establish there
a, base of supplies for the troops engaged
in the northern campaign, returned
today, General MacArthur having failed
to connect with the expedition. The
gunboata found tbe rebels entrenched at
Sosmoan and Cucuaga on the water
fronts of tbe town. The vessels steamed
past the works, shelling tbe occupants
and driving them out. Landing parties
from the boats entered both towns, cap
turing at Sosmoan a Spanish captain in
uniform, who was ostensibly a prisoner
in the bands of the rebels, and also a
native officer. Arriving at Guagua, the
town and a small gunboat were found to
be burning, and the natives were evacu
ating the place in consequence of tbe
bombardment. At Sosmoan the landing
party captured a number of Filipino
flags and a quantity of arms, chiefly
bolos, and bows and arrows, besides a lot
of band instruments, which the men
played as they marched back to the
boats.
Captain Grant's expedition will pro
bably return up the San Fernando river,
after having been reinforced, on the re'
cently purchased light-draught Spanish
steamers.
The Present Situation as Reported.
Washington, May 8. The war de
partment has received a cablegram from
Gereral Otis giving the situation in the
Philippines, some parts of which have
been omitted by the war department in
making it up. The dispatch is as follows
"Manila, May 8. To Adjutant-Gen
eral, Washington : The situation is as
follows: Lawton is at Maasih and
Baliang, and scouting partiesare out to
the north and east. MacArthur is at
San Fernando. The population of the
country between Manila and northern
points held by our troops are returning
home. They appear cheerful and con
tented. Army gnnboats operating in
the rivers have cleared the country west
of MacArthar's position of insurgents,
Signs of the insurgents' weakness are
more apparent daily. OTIS.
Department Officials Satisfied,
' Washington May 8.' War depart
ment officials seem to be even more en
couraged than ever over the condition of
affairs in Manila. The report of Otis to
day indicates that the American "troops
are well dispoeed. It has been ' evident
that the snsurgents who were operating
in swamps and jungles east of MacArthur

have been very annoying, but army gun- j
boats have made it too hot tor yiem to
remain. Lawton appears to be pushing
northward fifteen miles to the east of
MacArthur. The Rio Grande liver lies
between them, and there the gunboats
are evidently at wo'k. The portions of
tbe dispatch which the department has
not made public possibly refer to the
future movements of the two divisions of
the armv.

Claud Branton's Case.
Salem, May 7. Arguments and peti
tions for the commutation oi the
sentence of Claud Bran ton, sentenced to
be hanged in Eugene, will be made and
presented to Governor Geer tomorrow.
Judge Hale, Branton's attorney, ' will
make tbe argument. The main reason
for clemency will be that Branton's ac
complice, Courtland Green, is - now in
ail, and capital punishment in Bran
ton's case would be unjust. Branton
was convicted of tbe murder of John
Linn in tbe mountains in Lane county
last Jnne. His execution is for May 12.
I consider it not only a pleasure but a
duty I owe to my neighbors to tell about
the wonderful cure effected in rry case
by the timely nre of Chamberlain's
Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy.
I was taken very badly with flux and
procured a bottle of this remedy. A few
doses of it effected a permanent cure. I
take pleasure in recommending it to
others suffering from that dreadful dis
ease. J. W. Lynch, Dorr, W. Va. This
remedy is sold by Blakeley & Houghton,
never been claimed that Chamberlain's
Pain Balm would cast out demons, but
it will cure rheumatism, and hundreds
bear testimony to the truth of this
statement. One application relieves
the pain and this quick relief which it
affords is alone worth many time sits
cost. For sale by Blakeley & Houghton.

of the well. ' Ever since the flow began
it flooded, and no means of controlling
the etreain has yet been found.

Meat Packers Exonerated.
Washington, May 7. By direction of
the president, who approves the find

john today made public the report and
findings of the military court appointed
to investigate the charges made by
Major-General Miles, commanding the
army, that the beef supplied to the
army during the war with- Spain was
unfit for tbe use of the troops.' The
most important features 'of the report
are :
The finding that the general's find
ings that tbe refrigerated beef was
treated with chemicals were not estab
lished; that his allegations concerning
the canned fresh or canned roast beef
were sustained as to its unsuitability for
food as used on the transports and as a
long-continued field ration ; censure of
General Miles for "error" in failing to
promptly notify the secretary of war
when he first' formed tbe opinion that
the food was unfit; censure of the commissary-general
(then Gen. Eagan) for
tbe too-extensive purchase of the canned
beef as an untried ration; censure of
Colonel Mans, of General Miles' staff;
the finding that the packers were not
at fault, and that the meats supplied to
the army were of the same quality as
those supplied to the trade generally,
and the recommendation that no further
proceedings .. will be taken in the
premises.

Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been
made, and that too, by a lady in this
country. "Disease fastened its clutches
upon her and for seven years she with
stood its severest teets, but her vital
organs were andertermined and death
seemed imminent. For tbree months
she conghed incessantly, and could not
eleep. She finally discovered a way to
recovery, by purchasing of ua a bottle of
Dr. King's New Discovery for Consump
tion, and was so much relieved on taking
first dose, that she slept all night; and
with two bottles, has been absolutely
cured. Her name is Mrs. Luther Lutz."

THE MURISTAN.
A Historical Site in Jerusalem Graot-
. ed to Ccrriany for Its
New Chsrch.
'.jy
The Muristan, the site of the new
German church at Jerusalem, vyas
granted to Germany by the sultan in
1369. It is in the middle of the city,
near the Church of the Sepulchre, and
no spot was richer in remains of the
Latin domination to- say nothing of
the Saracenic ruins. In the reports- of
the Palestine Survey there is a photo
graph of a fine Gothic 'vfindow by Lieut.
Kitchener K. E. to-day the sirdar.
That window, together with portions
of cloisters, a belfry and a rich double
doorway, belonged to the Church of
St. Mary, built in 1130, a little earlier
than the beautiful church outside the
walls known as the Tomb of the Virgin,
the gift of Mclisinda, wife of King
Fulk. The bazars east of the Muris
tan, notably the meat market, are
medieval, and west of it lie buried be-neath-the
soil the buildings of the great
hospice of the Knights of St. John.. "
The kaiser will find at, least one an
cient, trace pf German crusaders : at
Jerusalem. "The Birket-es-Sultan was
made by the Germans to water their
horses,: and was. known in Latin times
as the German Pool.: Theodoricus men
tions it first. The greatest German
work in, the past was, of coarse, the re
building : of - the walls of the city by
Frederick II.,. in 1229. v But the - em
peror's . work lasted only ten : years,
when the. walls were destroyed by Arab
hordes under the emir of Kerak. Lon
