V rid ssimsSh SYff fl VOL. XI THE DALLES, OREGON. SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1899 NO 337 MINERS NOW IN CUSTODY Tlree Handrei am Fifty of tte Rioters Unto Guard. FIVE HUNDRED TROOPS THERE Three Charges Rioting, Destroying Property, Stopping"" the Mail In quest May Last a Week. Wardner, Idaho, May 5. Three hun and fifty miners accused of participating In Saturday's riot are now confined here tinder guard of United States troope. With today's arrivals, 500 United States troops are now in the Cceur d'Alene dis trict, and all fear of further outbreaks is passed. There will be three charges against the prisoners, namely, rioting,' destroy ing property and stopping the United States mails. It is unlikely that all of the prisoners will be tried, but they will be held antil evidence is collected against the leaders. General Merriam has his headquarters here, but a special train is held in readi ness to carry him to any part of the dis trict whenever he is needed. A majority of the troops are held in the vicinity of Wallace, Burke, Gem and Mullan, ow ing to the fact that most of the alleged rioters are in that district. The inquest over the bodies of Smith and Cheyne will probably last for at least a week, as about 100 witnesses are to be examined. Coroner France, in peaking of the inquest today, eaid: "The inquest is in the nature of a grand jury investigation. I have been author ized by Attorney-General Hayes, of Idaho, to make the investigation a? searching as possible. We desire to punish the guilty and release the inno cent as soon as possible." The Leaders Have Escaped. Washington, May 5. The war de partment has received the following die patch from General Merriam: "Wardner, Idaho, May 5. Adjutant General, Washington: The inquest is still in progress with closed doors. One hundred and twenty-eight arrests have been made by state officers under mill tary support. No signs of resistance are visible, bat indications are that most of the leaders of the mob have escaped by going east and west into Montana and Washington. Others are hiding in the mountains. The Bheriff at Thomp son Falls, Mont., reports many arriving on foot oyer the mountain trails. The governors of Idaho and Montana are corresponding to effect arrests in!Mon tana. The troops are in a position to do all that is possible. There is now no appearance of organized resistance. "MERRIAM." Cure. Send for circulars ; free. F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O. It is rc ported that the gardeners about Colum bus are putting in cultivation an un usual supply of truck this year, and they say they have been given some pointers as to the sure building of a railway on the north side of the Columbia river this summer. Yesterday Charles Tupper, a Yakima man, closed the sale for the Marvin property at Columbus, and it is currently reported that he has a deal on for some of Amos Stark's town lots, located at that point. On the Marvin place there is alfalfa now about ready to cut for the first crop of hay. Mr. Tupper says without the aid of irrigation be ex pects to cut three crops of alfalfa during the year, and the subirrigation frqm the riee of the Columbia in June will be sufficient to assume tbe second and third crops. He is of the opinion that when alfalfa is once started on the Columbia river, . tbe industry will rival that of Yukon country, from the fact that the great expense of irrigation will be avoided. Manila, May 5. 12 :25 p.m. Detailed reports of the work of General Lawton's expedition show that harder fighting took place during the early part of this week than earlier accounts indicated. In the attack upon San Rafeal the American forces were met with heavy fire from a large number of rebels who were concealed In the jungle on all sides It was only the adoption of tactics fol lowed in Indian fighting in the United States every man for himself that saved the division from greatloes. Gen eral Lawton, as usual, was at the bead of his line with his etaff. Scott's battery was demolished. General Lawton, when attacking in force outside ot Balinag, saw women and children in the rebel trenches, and sent Captain Case in advance with a white nag to warn the insurgents to remove tbe noncombatants. When within 500 yards of the trenches two volleys were fired at Captain Case's party. On Wednesday, April 3, the men en countered some Filipinos beyond Balinag and drove them nntil their 150 rounds of ammunition had been reduced to fifteen. They were about to retire when Lieut enant Boyd with a troop of the Fourth cavalry came up with them, and chased the enemy into San Meguel. There are 2000 Spanish prisoners in the hands of the Filipinos at San Miguel. They are served with five cents' worth of rice daily, and are compelled to work hard on the rebel defenses. Several hun dred of tbe Filipino wounded are at San Miguel. The insurgents are sending the women and children to the Bianaona- batto mountains. A Bolo chief and one of his men were captured at Balinag General Lawton has released many of his prisoners. General Luna Reported Wounded. New Yoke, May 5.
