PAY YOUR TAXES.
A county deserving prosperity
must like any other legitimate busi
ness collect her outstanding debts,
All property owners must be aware
that they arc yearly indebted to their
county in a certain sum of money to
liguidate their taxes, but, unfortu
nately, as in all other counties, we
Lave that certain class who favor the
postponement until the last hour,
and then invariably seek some tech
nical flaw in order to avoid payment.
Is it fair or just that A should pay
bis taxes promptly and thatB should
let his remain unpaid ? It compels A
to pay taxes on interest accumulated
by B.
Our county court has now on
hand for collection drolls for. the years
1895, 1896, 1897 and 1898, which it
requires the sheriff to close out by
sale during the present year. The
accumulation of back taxes invari
ably falsifies the county's assets with
unjust, illegal and double assess
ments, which no doubt are uncol
lectable. Therefore the county is
desirous of clearing up said rolls by
sale and thereby relieve property
owners of any apparent clouds to
their titles.
Some weeks ago we called, the at
tention in these columns to the fact
that we knew of a boy who had no
home, but who would be willing to
work for his board and clothing and
schooling in some good family. The
lad uow has a very nice home, as a
result of the announcement, and he
could have had his pick of several
such, or it least bis friends who were
looking out for him could. It would
surprise most people who nave had
no experience with these things to
know how many families there are
"where a good boy or girl would fit
in and be a very desirable acquisi
tion. There is, somewhere, a place
for every well disposed person, young
or old. It- is one of the most im
portant duties of society to find the
round holes for the round pegs in
the shape of individuals, and the
square holes for the square pegs.
' After all, the best crop we produce
is the crop of children. For them
all the work of the world is per
formed, for they trill soon be the
whole people. Salem Statesman.
The time seems ripe when the
"West should demand, and demand in
no uncertain tones, that it receive its
share of appropriations for internal
improvements. The river and harbor
bill of the congress just ended ear
ned $40,000,000 for such improve
ments, $38,000,000 of which was to
be expended in the Easr, and $2,000,
000 in the "West. Does this seem a
fair division of the people's money ?
As Senator Warren and Senator
Carter said m the senate in the dis
cussion of this bill, the West pays its
share of taxes and it' should receive
its share of benefits. It should re-
ceive, to be used for storage reser
voirs on the headwaters of the
navigable rivers, its share of the
vast sums spent annually in the East
ern United States for the widening
and dredging of rivers and improve
ments of harbors.
Col. Robt. G. Ingersoll delivered
an address a short time ago at the
funeral of Mrs. Marj' J. Bowman in
Kansas City. Col. Ingersoll is an
old friend of the family, and in his
address said: "I first met the lady
who now lies before us asleep, nearly
half a century ago. Then we were
both young and poor, with nothing
but youth and hope to start on.
Somehow, somewhere I feel that I
shall meet her again." ,
Mrs. George, just acquiited of the
murder of Saxton, says she is going
to lecture on "woman rights". Just
the same, it was her counsel's elo
quent plea on "woman wrongs" that
saved her.
