The pleasant method and beneficial
effects of the well known remedy,
Syrup of Figs, manufactured by the
California Fig Syrup Co., illustrate
the value of obtaining the liquid laxa
tive principles of plants known to be
medicinally laxative and presenting
them in the form most refreshing to the
,st,e and acceptable to the system. It
33 the one perfect strengthening laxa
tive, clean sinar the system effectually,
dispelling colds, headaches and fevers
gently yet promptly and enabling one
to overcome habitual constipation per
manently. Its perfect- freedom from
-every objectionable quality and sub
;stance, and its acting on the kidneys,
liver and bowels, without weakening
or irritating them, make it the ideal
laxative. ,
In the process of manufacturing figs
are used, as they are pleasant to the
taste, but the medicinal qualities of the
remedy are obtained from senna and
other aromatic plants, by a, method
known to the California Fig Syrup
Co. only. In order to get its beneficial
effects and to avoid imitations, please
remember the full name of the Company
printed on the front of every package.

OREGON'S EARLY NEWSPAPERS
Concerning Printing in Oar State's In
fancy. -A Taper.
We publish below an interesting pa
per which is one of a cumber equally as
instructive which have been read at the
meetings of the Taine class recently
The following article was given by Mrs.
Fred Bayley:
The first printing press brought to
Oregon was sent to the Sandwich Is
lands by the American board fo foreign
missions in 1819, and was used there
for printing books in the Hawaiian
language. In 1833, at the request of
Dre. Whitman aud Spaulding, it was
transferred to Oregon, to the Nez Perce
mission on the Clearwater, now known
as the Lapwai Agency. The press was
used for some time to print books in the
Nez Perce and Walla Walla languages.
Among the books printed was one en
titled the "Ntz Perce's 1 irst Book," for
xhildren and beginners. Another was
rtthe "Gospel of Matthew," translated by
H. H. Spaul-.:ing. There was also a
'book of hymns prepared by Spaulding.
The.firBt newspaper in Oregon, and
f-also the first on the Pacific coast, was
"'the Oregon Spectator, published Feb. 5,
1848. There had been a small press in
California since 1834, but no" newspaper
was published until after the American
conquest, eix months later than the
Oregon paper.
The Spectator was a eemi-monlhly
.journal of four pages, 15x11 inches in
eiz3, containing four columns each, and
printed with clear type and in a tasteful
style, by John Fleming, a practical
printer and an immigrant" of 1844. It
was first edited by the president of the
Oregon Printing Association, W. G. T.
Vault. Afterwards several editors were
employed and removed in quick suc
cession, for holding opinions adverse to
the controlling power in the association.
The general aim of the Spectator was,
while advocating good morals, temper
ance, and education, to pereue the
Hudson Bay Company with unremitting,
Hotten coyert, hoetinty. T. vault was
dismissed at the end of ten weeks for
being too lenient. It was published
-semi-monthly until Sept. 1850, when it
-changed to a weekly, and was printed
on one of Hoe's Washington presses.
Having outlived colonial times and Eeen
Oregon City dwindle from the first town
In Oregon to the rank of second or
third, the press and material of the
Spectator were sold in 1855 to publish a
paper under another name and for polit
ical purposes. News six months old.
The Oregonian was started in Decem
ber, 1850, and the Oiegcn Statesman at
Oregon City the March following. '. A
third paper called the Times was started
in Portland in May, 1857.
The Oregonian was founded by T. J
Dryer, and was a weekly journal. Dryer
brought an old Ramage press from San
Fraceieco, with eome Becond-hand ma
terial which he used for a few monthe,
when a new Washington press and new
material came from ..New York by sea.
Toe old press was sent to Olympia to
etarlthe first paper published on Puget
Sjurid, called the Columbian. Dryer
CJnducted the paper for ten years, when
it paesed into the hands of H. L. Pittock,
who first began work'on it as a printer
an 1853. Bancroft adds, it has since
become a daily, and is edited and partly
owned by Harvey W. Scott. Lair Hill
was at one time editor of the Oregonian.
The Statesman was founded by A. W.
Stock well and Henry Russell, of Massa
chusetts, with A. Bush as editor. It
was published at Oregon City nntil
Jane, 1853, when it was moved to Salem,
Being and remaining the official paper
of the territory, it was' moved back and
forth as ihe capital was moved. As a
party paper it was conducted with
greater ability than any journal on the
Pacific coast, for about twelve years.
Bush was assisted at various times by
men of talent.
In 1859 The Dalles Journal was found
ed by Captain Jordan, and was first
published in the garrison. It was bought
by W. H. Newell in 1860, and was
changed to the Mountaineer and moved
to an office on the lot where Mrs. IS. M.
Wilson now lives. It became the Titnee
Mountaineer when John Michell took
charge of it as owner and editor. Capt.
Jordan was afterwards commissary gen
eral of the Confederate army.
The Eugeue Journal was started in
1863 by Kincaid, who still owns and
edits it. 1
D. C. Ireland was the first editor of
the old Astorian.
The first press was brought here for
the benefit. of the Indians, but how soon
it was converted to the sole use of the
white man ; and it seems thus in all
things pertaining to the Indians, for
"Behind the squaw's light birch canoe.
The steamer smokes and raves.
And corner lots are staked for sale
