General -Wheaton's brigade, which includes the First Washington volun teer regiment, while deprived of the honor of attacking the main body of the insurgents, has been kept busy; From the dispatches it appears that the work of the last two days has Teen less dangerous than formerly, and it is probable, therefore, that no material loss has been inflicted on the fearless men from the northwest. Kansas has had the danger post, and right gloriously has the prairie state shown the stuff in her soldier boys. They have repeated the achievement of the First Washingtons in crossing a stream and charging up a hill in the face of a heavy fire, dislodging the enemy. Major General Otis has at last discovered the worth of the western troops, and their performance of duty has forced from a hitherto reluctant administration the admis sion that they are on a par with if not more experienced in brilliant fighting than the sturdy regulars. It has remained for the western volunteers to wipe out the disgrace ,of the Seventy-first New York at Santiago, when Europe was given to understand that American volun teers were poor soldiers. When the reports of foreign attaches at Manila reach their home governments" the press of England and the continent will adopt a more respectful tone toward the volunteers. Spokesman- Xeview. It is true that when "our boys" marched away last May under stream ing banners, to the inspiring strains of martial music, we knew that they were enlisted to fight; true, also, that their letters during months of absence have breathed eagerness for the fray, But all of that was dim and unreal, problematical at best; while tbis- this is reality. The conflict is going on so far away that mothers may not hasten to the hospitals to nurse and cheer the wounded, or fathers join the ranks of those who search the bloody canebrake, charged with the sad duty of identifying the dead and perhaps bearing a hero home for burial. This is war war waged by Americans on a, foreign shore. In -vain we tell ourselves and each other that we expected the shock of battle an'l were prepared for it. The blow as staggering, nevertheless, though as a brave people, people loyal to their country in any cause that it champions we will rally our forces of endurance and patriotism and meet it without more of flinching than nature , exacts its her reasonable tribute. Resigna tion will come later to sorely stricken hearts perhaps or, if not resigna tion, placid submission " to the inevi table that is a kind of endowment of reason. Oregonian. In 1897, the latest vear for which statistics are complete, the revenues of the British colonies were $755, 000,000 and the expenditures $745, 000,000. At this rate it will be some time before the British Empire is financially destroyed by its distant possessions.
