Rev. G. Bushing, of La Grande, will
commence a series of revival meetings
in the Christian cbnrch here on Wed
nesday evening of this week, to continue
indefinitely.
This week would be just the time in
which to make a thorough' clean-up in
our city, so that Easter will find us pre
pared for its coming. The trees are now
about to blossom, eo let ns also pat on
oar holiday attire and, like Jerusalem of
old, let every citizen sweep in front of
bis own door yard.
No day is so bright bat that it seems
dark and dreary to some saddened

Edwin and Elizabeth Laughlin, of
Endersby, whose Son, Charley, 3 years
and 6 months old, was taken from them
by death. His funeral will' take place
tomorrow at Endersbv.
Max Vogt has succeeded in so com
pletely transforming the interior of the
bailding to be occupied by C.E. Dawson
as a grocery store, that one would hard
ly recognize it as being the same build
ing as of yore. Mr. Dawson expects to
have everything in ' readiness for . an

Mer"ElTac! Cunningham, of Uma
tilla county, has brought suit for divorce
against her husband C. C. Cunningham,
now in the state penitentiary on a life
sentence for murder. They were mar
ried in The Dalles in 1882, after Cun
ningham had left Albany. They have
four children, one of whom is named
after Grover Cleveland. W. W. Statesman.
Being ever ready to please the ladies,
Mr. Estcbennett has determined to
make it possible for them to have their
shoes polished without advertising to
every passer-by just how large their
feet are. He has therefore fitted up a
etand opening out of - the main room of
his place of business, where ladies can
have their shoes polished without oc
cupying the front chairs.
The hens in the vicinity of The Dalles
evidently believe in eggspansion. Hens
they have been laying for a chance to give
a practical demonstration of their belief.
Harry Beal, who lives three miles south
of here, brought one of tbeir expansion
eggs to this officethis morning, and it
was found to measure 8x6 inches, and
weigh 3 ounces. Probably the hens
are aware that Easter is neai at hand.
We understand there is some talk of
circulating a petition among the ladies
of our ;ity, whereby they agree, to do
their shopping during the day, and
thus induce our merchants to close their
places of business at 7 o'clock during
the summer months. This is just the
idea The Chronicle endeavored to set
forth in "an article last week, and we
trust the good work will go on. The
summer evenings are just the hours the
proprietor and his clerks need to them
selves in which to recuperate for the
duties of the following dav. We feel
positive our business men need little
persuasion on this - line, and that it
rests mostly with the ladies to inaugu
rate this good work. Will they do it?

THE SAME OLD CHESTNUT.
Bat If Ton Intend to Drive This Sum
mer You Alust Encounter Them.
It may seem to be an old story to the
readers of newspapers in The Dalles,
this question of the roads of our city.
Nevertheless we cannot refrain from
touching upon it just so often, especially
as the season comes on when the same
old roads have' to be traveled over, and
we realize jaet how much might be ac
complished were a certain amount of
repairing done each yt-ar.
What a satisfaction it is to everyone
to note that at least a few of our trials
in this line are to cease, and that when
we contemplate a pleasant drive on the
river road, there will not be ever present
the thought that the Rubicon is to be
crossed before we reach the goal in
other words that there is a stretch of
road between Mill creek bridge and the
junction of the . river road and Cheno-
weth road, which would try the soul of
the bravest, and make him wonder if it
is worth while encountering those rocks
for the privilege of a good drive farther
on. We understand tne road is being
leveled down and much improved.
Now if that small stretch of sand inter
vening between the old Mission gardens
and the drive down Chenoweth could be
planked over, whit a joy it would be to
those who so frequently make this trip
daring the summer evenings.
Right here we must stop and consider
that Ninth street bridge is often crossed
in driving down this road, and no one
who has ever "tackled" those tormen'
ing "boulders" just before the small
cat is reached will ever forget the jolting
experienced, and the apologies neces
sary to strangers who may accompany
as.
Another source of satisfaction is that
the steep grade at the head of Union
street has been reduced and that we
may drive out Mill creek without first
wearing bat a team in reaching the
good stretch of road beyond. The great
difficulty with driving in The Dalles has
always been the fact that to reach the
good roads outside of the city limits,
the 'city roads must first be met and
conquered.
Although chapter after chapter might
be written on the splendid boulevards
to the south and eaet of us, we will
spare our readers the pain of contempla
tion and continue in oar next.
