The following letter was received by Judge Blakeley from the secretary of the Oregon Press Acsociation in answer to Ins communication regarding the en tertainment of the editors who will visit our state. The plan of taking onr visit' ors from here to Portland by boat is t splendid one, and we trust will be con eunimated. Mr. Tozier says : Portland, Ore., March 21, 1899. Hop. Geo. C. Blakeley. President Com mercial Club, The Dalles, Oregon. Diar Sir and Friend: With pleasure I read yours of even date regarding the action of the Commercial Club in the matter of entertaining the National Editorial Association delegates. .Having attended the association about a dozen times, leads me to agree with the opinion expressed by the directors, that a trip down the grand Columbia after a dusty ride from Spokane would be the proper move. I will at onca for ward a copy cf letter to J. M. Ppge, cor responding secretary, National Editorial Association, Jerseyville, 111., and I sug gest that you write him at your earliest convenience regarding the matter. He selects routes coming and coing. Our .local committee arranges for excursions while the delegates are here. lit ia expected that the delegates ar rive here not earlier than the morning of July 4. That matter rests with Mr. Page. He could eo arrange that the special arrive at the metropolis of Waeco county about 9 a. m., the 3d, spend two hours in your city, then board the steamer for this city, arriving in time for them to aid us in ushering in the 4th. Our people desire to have the delegates here tbe morning of tbe Fourth or not later than noon of that day. It would be difficult to arrive here earlier than noon if the boat left at 6 a. m., yet, if the run would be made in five hours, as you state, it would put the delegation here about the hour the eagle screams. The delegates will be governed by Mr. Page's suggestions, and the sooner all of our plans are laid before him the better for all concerned. The Dalles will be recognized on this program. A committee will meet the delegates at the state line. Another could meet them at The Dalles. By making tbe river trip on the way here would save a day that could be devoted to some other point. Prehaps that day could be spent at Vancouver. It is the desire of the Portland, Press ' Club and the citizens, that every minute possible be put to good use. The dele gates can sleep when they get home. There will be at - least calculation 500 people to accommodate, and Mr. Alia way may have a bill of damages for having Lis boat swamped-. - - Personally, I like your suggestions, and were I one of the visiting delegates, would prefer the trip from The Dalles by boat. A souvenir button with Vic Vrevitt'a monument pictured thereon, might make a nice attractive article for , the delegates to carry . home. Or turn tbe delegates loose on Memaloose island, and tell them to "carry nothing away." In case the special train should can tinne South after leaving here, it will be necessary, for the delegates to viait Spokane on their way here. That may I change the plans somewhat. Washing- I trtn aaaiotJ1 OrtrAn in aapnnnff Ik A pun. vention, and mast be recognized. As the trip by boat will occupy not over an hour longer than the one by train, I am of the opinion that Mr. Page will decide to accept tbe plan you suggest. . Have written 387 letters in connection with this editorial matter, and my troubles are jast beginning. I personal ly reply to all inquiries, and am glad to aid in making the fourteenth annual session of the National Editorial Asso ciation the greatest in the association's history. .' The Dalles will never regret having bestowed attention npon the delegates to the greatest body of organized news paper men in the world.
